Obviously a noob question. Is there a sticky with a list of commonly used abbreviations? It took me a while to figure out what OP meant... at first I thought, other person... then figured out "original poster"... at least, I hope that is what it means.

I have no clue what "CONUS" means.

Usually means:

Contiguous United States
or
Conterminous United States

It's used when one wants to exclude Hawaii AND Alaska. It's usually not interpreted as Continental United States, which would include Alaska.

Chris,

thank you so much. I tried to figure it out but though I knew it was something simple, I couldn't seem to figure it out.

so again, thanks for answering a ignorant noob question.

Haha I grew up learning through the US school system so I'm not surprised I got that wrong :). A co worker started listing off past presidents and I swear I'd never heard of 80% of them. It's sad but true. I can setup a website, build a computer and beat the latest Modern Warfare with ease but I can't list more that 7 US presidents.

No problem. Sometimes forum lingo just blends in so much that most of us forget that at one time we didn't know what it meant either.

Thanks, Charles... that is very helpful... easier than google for this particular category of ignorance. :o

I always thought it meant Contingent On Noone Upping Saleprice.

Or maybe it was: Contingent On Noone Usurping Seller

Or was it: Constitution Of Nonpayment Usually Sucks

??

But I wonder, does everyone who posts CONUS always mean to exlcude HI and AK? It seems that most posts say CONUS only, but the people I've contacted don't seem to have a problem selling to me in HI and they don't charge extra to ship. It's a small thing of course, until like me you happen to live in one of those 2 states which appear to be excluded from 75% or more of the sales in the marketplace section.

As an addition to the thread, OCONUS (pronounced oh-cone-us) means Outside the Continental US. OCONUS includes Alaska, Hawaii, and the rest of the world.

I don't know if these terms originated with the US military, but they are in common use there.

Because a lot of people are plain stupid....... Sad but true. By that I mean when you tell people about the extra charge that the shipping company charges. People get all up in arms, saying that they are ripping them off and blah blah blah. There's a lot of people who **** and moan about shipping times and charges, which are completely out of the shippers hands. So most of the time, its a lot easier to avoid the hassle of trying to explain to an idiot.

I really don't understand why the shipping length is on EBAY as feedback. When there's literally nothing the shipper can do once it leaves there hands. Sometimes it can be a shippers fault if they are lazy or cheap, but it is usually the shipping companies fault.

I mean I am Canadian and I even get it. Most of the time if you PM the shipper and tell them you are prepared to pay the extra shipping charges, people are happy to sell it. But not all the time, so I just usually offer and if I get declined... worth a try, but completely understood.

I think you are correct about the origination. Now there is the CONUS weather satellite, which sees, voila!: http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/RadarImg/latest.gif (external link)
