This question has probably been asked but I couldn't find any definitive answer in my searches.
I am looking at a 1D mkIII but am leery about jumping on it without knowing the shutter count. Has anyone figured out a way (besides bringing the body into Canon) to determine how many shutter actuations the body has?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Be happy! ;)

The only way is to have a Canon Service Center check it out for you.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

This... I bought one that the owner thought only had slightly less than 10,000 actuation's. Sent it to Canon and found out it really had 37 thousand and some change. The camera was in great condition, the seller threw in an extra battery, and I honestly believed that he just didn't know about how to get an accurate shutter count so I didn't make an issue out of it (37,000 is still a really good count).

Anyway, if it's in really good cosmetic condition the chances are that it's been treated kindly and probably isn't over the 100,000 mark. Besides, there's nothing saying that the shutter wouldn't fail even with only a thousand shots on it.

If the overall condion is excellent, I don't think that you should worry about shutter count...although you can send it in if it concerns you..

The 1dIII came out with a 300,000 rated shutter life, which is more than other Canons, although it could fail at any time.

Still, if the rest of the camera is good, a shutter replacement is pretty cheap..

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

Ugh...I absolutely HATE the "rated shutter life" BS...90% of cameras I've seen with replaced shutters fail well before the rated shutter life...if this was a car, there'd be a class-action lawsuit already.

there is no "rated shutter life"

the Canon figure quoted is MTF which is mean time rating for a failure, which is purely a statistic, being an average number of actuations before going bang.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Yes, I am fully aware that "suggested" ratings are NEVER a sure thing. My thinking is merely based on probabilities. The likelihood of failure is significantly higher at 400k than it is at 40k. So I guess as LarryD says, I just have to take chances on the most cosmetically well taken care of body.....
