Raw focal length will give better results than throwing a TC on a shorter lens. Also, the TC on the 70-200 will make it 98-280...you'll lose width on the wide end and not reach your goal on the long end; plus, you'll lose a stop on your max aperture at the wide end, over the 70-300. - Eric S.: My Birds/Wildlife

It is one of the sharpest canon zoom lens they ever made! Not to mention, the 70-300mm is just ugly when zooming in.
