The cheapest is getting some tubes and use them with your current lenses. You can get tubes with no electronics for around $20 on ebay.

The non-electronic tubes are quite difficult with which to work.

I would suggest perusing eBay and other on-line photo sites for a used Tamron 90mm f/2.8 AF SP lens. I got mine for less than a hundred bucks used on eBay. That is about a cheap as a lens can get. This is the model prior to the present SP lens. However, it produces excellent imagery at a bargain price. As an added bonus, it is a pretty nice portrait lens also.

The Phoenix 1oomm f/3.5 Macro lens is really quite a decent glass at around a hundred bucks. It is also sold as Cosina (who I believe makes the lens), Vivitar and others.

Get a Canon 500D or Marumi DHG achromat.... these dual element diopters are quite good, cheap.. and you don't need to carry much extra...
I've been using a Marumi +3 on a 70-300 VR for bug photos.... quite happy with it!

(yes, I'm a Nikon shooter now, BTW.... may be a setup Canon too in the near future! First post here.. hope I'm not burnt at stake for mentioning The Other Side!)

We no longer burn people at the stake for using Nikon gear every since execution by lethal injection was developed...

Extension tubes by kenko. They are 140 bucks and you're not shooting through substandard glass.

These are what I use. 35L and the 12mm tube is fantastic.

Not sure if your budget would run to it, but the Tokina 100 macro (external link) gets very good press at $449.

Cheers, Oggy :)

Extension tubes. Try that first, and they are not hard to work with.

Used Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro lenses go quite cheaply sometimes and they are optically excellent. Half life sized would let you fill the frame with an area 2.83 x 1.89" with your 5D and even less with the 40D.

I got my 50mm 2.5 CM for $170 used. For shots of rings this would be an excellent choice if you really want a macro. A forgotten unloved old lens that has great IQ. However, tubes on a non macro lens is another excellent suggestion.
