I bought a used S5is from my local camera shop. I seem to be having a problem with the zoom in macro mode. It wont zoom and focus. Perhaps this is why someone sold it. I do have a years warranty. Am I missing something or should I bring it in for service?

Did it come with the manuals? There is only a limited range in which you can use Macro (p. 16 of the Basic manual), and it's not available in all shooting modes (Advanced manual, p. 199). Manuals can be downloaded from Canon here (external link).

I quickly learned not to bother with the normal macro mode on my S5IS. Auto-focus is always hit or miss, and manual focus isn't much better.

Now the Super-macro mode, otoh, is fantastic! You don't get any zoom function but the close-up images are amazing for a P&S.

Imho, you should just forget about the normal macro and go straight to super macro!
