Well the day came, today was my once in a lifetime opportunity to fly in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Avro Lancaster Bomber. I awoke to sun & blue skies but a layer of cloud and haze soon moved in. It's late and I could write a book but bed beckons. I can sum up the flight by saying it's like nothing I've ever experienced! I'm still in awe, especially with the incredibly low pass over Toronto Island Airport runway. We flew over at a height of 30'-50' and it was insane rush!

The CWHM crew were inviting and offered us every opportunity to experience the flight from various locations. Seat-belted only for take-off & landing, I spent the rest of the flight in the rear turret (but my height limited my view) or up in the cockpit area. I shot stills and a little video with the 7D. My plan is to edit some video along with a selection of stills, but that will have to wait until the winter when I have some spare time.

Here's a selection of shots from my most fabulous day, and some additional shots can be seen at HERE (external link)

After take-off a hard bank to the left bought us back around by the CWHM

Upon request from the Toronto Island Airport control tower, we flew a low pass along the length of the Island runway. Low being 30'-50' off the ground! Incredible flying skill and what a rush!

Love the hand held GPS nailed on the control panel. I wonder what they would have given to have had one when they were on OP's for real?

Thanks guys! I don't believe there's anything I'll do in my lifetime that will top this experience. The way the Lanc is built is set to have her see many years of service and my hope is my 6 year old can one day take the flight.

Put this on your bucket list! 2012 is the CWHM's 40th anniversary and they are planning what has been referred to as an incredible air show commemorating warplanes at next year's Hamilton Airshow. Plan to make the trip!

Thank You. My father served as a flight engineer on Lanc's. Lots of early memories of living in Greenwood while the Lanc's filled the air daily. Always look forward to seeing or hearing one.

You lucky dog! That must have been a great experience, especially when you consider the location on top of that. Great images. Really like the view down on Niagara Falls and the plane's shadow.

Great Shots! When I was younger I was in Alberta and my family went to the air museum and I got to be inside of these planes, I wonder if this could be the same one even.
