Is this something that Canon fixes for no charge? I have a 5dc and after the shuttle launch I wouldn't mind bringing it in to have that done if it's free. I've got a backup to tithe me over until then. How do you know if it's already been done?

if the repair work has not been done, they will send an invitation letter
but they don't, that means yours will work like a charm =)

My mirror popped up after a sensor clean just like that. Recommend you get it fixed asap. They will do it free of charge if your shutter count hasnt exceeded 100,000

Okay then, I'll get it taken care of after this Shuttle launch. I've probably got about 9k on it, low miles. Is it also possible to get a shutter count from them while they have it?

Other than that I've had no issues at all with it and it has been probably the best camera I've ever shot that cost less than 1000 dollars.

J-dogg, whereabouts are you based? With a question like this (and many others) the answer depends on where you live and where the camera came from.

You mention the shuttle launch, so I presume you are currently in the US, but your gear list is using the european camera names (400D and not rebel whatever).

The free fix is not available worldwide, it isn't available here in the UK for instance (because we don't need it) and I suspect that much of Europe will be the same. So, if you are only in the US on vacation, then you may not be able to get the free fix when you get home. Similarly, if you live in the US but the body is a grey import (which I presume would be the case with the 400D at least) then Canon USA is unlikely to offer a free fix on a camera that they didn't supply.

Why is this? Canon Europe has the same 2009 announcement on their website as on the US version - http://cpn.canon-europe.com …s/eos_5d_mirror_repair.do (external link)

I'm not affected by this, just curious why we don't need it...

Because the mirror issue only occurs if the camera is used for extensive periods in hot and humid climates, not cold and wet ones like here in Blighty. As our climate is not going to cause the problem to occur, Canon UK has (quite rightly in my opinion) decided not to spend a fairly large amount of money recalling and 'fixing' a large number of cameras that aren't faulty and aren't likely to become faulty.

I believe that they have done the mirror fix (free of charge) in a few cases, where they have been contacted by someone about to embark on an extended trip to an area of the world where the climate could cause a problem to develop.

I have had a 5Dc for 5 or 6 years, and put around 100,000 clicks on it with no problems. I am not remotely worried about the mirror never having been fixed.

The Canon website is ambiguous then as it appears to offer free repair only for affected cameras - suggesting that the mirror needs to be detached before they fix it (or how would you know it was affected?) Other parts of Europe can of course be both hot and humid.

Thanks for the clarification though.

It's easy to ask a question about a Canon camera fix/repair on this forum, but usually there's a variety of answers depending on where the world the answer comes from. In the end you're going to call Canon anyhow, why not do it in the first place and get the correct information for where you live. It was a free fix for where I live (US) and I believe it was determined by the serial number of the camera. Turn around was fairly quick, around two weeks if I remember correctly. They also replaced and returned the original focus screen, which I'm guessing they may have damaged in the repair. The mirror had not detached prior to sending it in.

In a recent thread regarding the 5D mirror fix, the camera was sent in and in the course of the repair Canon "found" other things wrong with the camera which the owner was supposed to pay for above and beyond the free mirror fix. Not sure if this happens often, but something to be aware of.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.
