Refurb 7D.....any suggested tests to check it?

Got my refurb 7D a couple weeks ago. Im not an avid shooter (then why do I need a 7D, right? :) ) so I was wondering if there are any suggested tests that I can do to verify its OK.

The camera itself looks brand new and had only 443 shutter activations when I got it.

Ive snapped a bunch of pics so far and the camera seems to be functioning as expected, but I figured Id ask the experts what would be some suggested things to try (I have my old 18-55 kit lens from my Rebel XT, with a 55-250mm on the way). So far Ive noticed that I can get pretty sharp results at 18mm, f8, ISO400 using the onboard flash from a short distance...the pics get a little soft at the long end, Im assuming thats a shortcoming of the lens itself.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

-Chris

Neither of the lens you mention are particularly outstanding and the 7D is quite demanding of good glass as it will show any shorcomings. Just go and shoot stuff to give the AF a workout including AF Servo, a variety of shutter speeds and apertures and all the ISO's. Agreat camera I also upgraded from the XT, which I still have and is a super little camera.

Most of me thinks the camera is just fine. The fact that it most likely got personal attention from someone at Canon means there is probably a better chance its all set than if it were right off the line!

But Im coming from such an older camera (Rebel XT) that a lot of this is new to me and I just want to be sure the camera itself is fine, and Im the only defective piece in the chain :)

B&H has some good videos on setting a 7D up.

Here's a place to start

Don't worry too much about proving you camera is OK just take lots of pictures and enjoy it. The majority of cameras have no problems so unless you are having specific problems with some aspect of the camera just keep shooting and have fun. Don't make the mistake of viewing all your shots at 100% looking for problems. View your pictures full screen and learn to use DPP or some other software to add a little sharpness, adjust white balance, brightness, or color slightly as needed.

If you have a problem then by all means seek help on this forum as there are lots of people that can give you help. Search this forum for information and you will find answers to most of your questions.

Check the video function. I had lines thru the video of my refurb 7D and dropped it off at the Canon Irvine, CA for a check one Thursday afternoon. It was returned to me on Saturday by FEDEX withthe video adjusted and with the sensor cleaned

The video function now has an additional 6-month warranty...

I think that sensor cleaning is automatically done on any camera sent to the service center for repair or adjustment. Canon normally charges $30 (USD) to clean a sensor. So it might be a good idea to send a camera in for an imaginary problem right towards the end of the 90-day warranty.

I am lucky in that I live relatively close (by Southern California Freeway standards) to the Canon Irvine Service Center. I have always found the service representatives at Irvine to be helpful, polite and competent.

Shoot some photos in very high shutter speed such as 1/1200 sec or less & in high bursts. If there are shutter problems, they will show up as white bands along the edges of your image.
