SX30 IS Super Zoom

Please post any thoughts you have on this camera.

I have this camera myself and really like it. Would just like to see how other users found it.

I bought this camera, my 1st digital, specifically to take macro shots of my coin collection,I soon got into insects also.
For mostly personal reasons, I soon bought a DSLR and gave the sx30 to my wife.
The SX30 did take good macro shots and all the exposure settings were adjustable in macro mode.
The 35x zoom worked great, the controls and adjustments were easy to operate and access.
I believe the SX30 has a full range of exposure parameters. Also has two C modes, programmable memory settings, that's a great feature!
I just got into photography,not knowing anything and the sx30 made it easy to learn digital photography.
By the way, I moved up to a better camera because I wanted to use specific lenses, not due to any fault/problem with the SX30.

I had the SX30 about a year ago upgrading from the SX20.
It is a Good super zoom camera no doubt,The Zoom alone is amazing I thought.
However I sent mine back because I found when not using the zoom feature the SX20 just took better pics,,Maybe it was just the camera or just me.
With that said I would not mind having another one just for that extra power in certain situations if the price went down. IMO of course.

HogansHeroes - Find somebody who has an SX10 - set that on Superfine saves of largest image - 3648 x 2736 - 10Mpix - and then take the same shots with it and your SX20 under different light/shade conditions...

The difference in the straight-from-camera images is surprising. I've mentioned before a lady friend here who borrowed my SX10 to take on a trip, and was so pleased with the results she tried to buy one... Too late - and she ended up with an SX20.

After a month with it - she offered it to me as a swap - with 11-months Warranty on it, and "it does HD video!" + $50.00 - for my SX10... No way.....!

I later bought a Fuji HS10 - 10Mpix on a BSI-CMOS sensor (same actual size as the SX10's CCD) - and as in your case - while the HS10 has a lot more zoom - the SX10 murders it for JPEG IQ!

It takes shooting and processing RAWs with the HS10 to beat the SX10's JPEGs - and then not by a lot...

Seems that Canon must have hit an SX10 design "sweet-spot" with just 10Mpix on that type of CCD - that betters almost any other P&S - other than specialist G-Series and the S-Series, both with the larger sensor.

But - if I can find a really clean SX30 at a low price - I'd buy it just for the Std HD Video - that's very controllable and works exceptionally well for a P&S ultra-zoom..

I know this is a Canon forum but in the superzoom class the Sony HX-100V is a very nice camera (I own one). I did not like the Nikon P500, slow, and didn't focus at full zoom. The Canon I didn't get to test and I also didn't like that it was CCD and 720p opposed to CMOS and 1080p. I'm probably just crazy on the chip. Also, the Sony is spot on and quick in focusing. I do like the articulating screen on the SX30 and if I find one cheap on Craigslist I might get one. But again, the Sony is real nice and the video is amazing if that matters to you. If you are pixel peeper none of these cameras will suit you.

I upgraded from an S3 to an SX20 and for the most part, I felt that the IQ wasn't really any better. I thought about the SX30, but instead took the plunge back into the SLR world with a T2i (I owned several film SLRs back in the day) and haven't regretted it.

I still use the SX20. It's a great camera and it's a nice "all-in-one" package that's easy to carry and use.
