Got a tip from a fellow birder on an accessible area of open grasslands, we had really nice weather this weekend so I went out and explored.

Savannah sparrow:

Meadowlark (based on its song, I believe it's a western meadowlark):

Very well done! Yep, that last one's a Western Meadowlark and really looks to be going strong :)

Great set Liz - the light and IQ on the Meadowlark shot is top drawer. Well done.

Thanks all. That meadowlark was very cooperative, singing his heart out and let me get pretty close! Beautiful song, too. There were also some bobolinks in the area but unfortunately they kept their distance.

Oooh, you are right, thanks for the correction! I have photographed grasshopper sparrows before so should have caught that. There were many of both types of sparrow in the area and when I saw the savannah sparrows I didn't look too closely to distinguish them.

Fortunately I'm taking a sparrow workshop (external link) in October so I can get better at sparrow ID! :D

Now here's a savannah sparrow for you from the same area. Even though they are both from a similar angle where the breast isn't visible, comparing this with the other shows the difference - savannah sparrow being more streaked and grasshopper not so much.
