Im away from my manual but I would like to know if I put a 420ex on the hot shoe would it pick up the functionality of the pop up flashes master capability using the controls in the body to trigger a couple more 420ex's off camera?

You need a master capable speedlite to do that and in that case you are not utilizing the built in features on the 60d. 60D | 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS | 70-200 4L | 50 1.8 | 100 2.8 macro | 1.4x II | 580EX | 430EX II
