Good composition. I like the placement of the subject in both frames. However, the focus is too soft for me. Both pictures seem slightly out of focus. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I think the pictures would look better with a sharper focus. Try using a tripod, and use the timer for the shutter. Also, you might want to pick a background color that contrasts more with the subject.

if you look closer, you will see the focus is on the face on the first photo, and the arm/hand on the second.

Nice pictures, Kevin. They look clean and crisp. One thing you might consider experimenting with, is perhaps closing down your aperature a bit and getting more depth of view. That way you can try to get more of the subject in focus? I don't know if this will work with the setup you have, but if it does, it may just turn out quite nicely. Of course, this really is a personal-preference sort of thing. G'luck!!
