I just bought a 5D Classic as a backup to my 5D2, and I can only get it to autofocus by pressing the exposure lock * button. The shutter button won't drive the AF. Is this a setting I'm missing or is it broken?

I've already tried to reset all settings...

Thanks in advance,

-Adam

You should be able to control that with custom function #4.

Sounds like its been set for "back button focus". Its one of the custom function settings. Don't have a camera with me but do a search for Back button focus. Theres many threads on it.

I didn't see clear custom functions as an option before - yeah it's OK now.

Thanks,

It sounds as if its set to Cfn 4-3 back button focus.
If you want to go back to 'normal' the default setting Cfn 4-0.
But like Gonzogolf says learn to love back button focus

It helped me a lot. When focus recomposing and the focus on the shutter button I tended to lock focus, recompose then occasionally I would sometimes relax my finger just a tad and thus causing it to refocus as I triggered the shutter. Thats thing of the past with the back button.

I played with it a little, and it seemed cool while shooting landscape, but my hand felt in the way while I was shooting portrait.

Maybe it's because I'm right handed, but left eyed...
