Challenge #335 - umbrellas
_______________
Submissions

IMAGE: http://rpolitsr.rafaelpolit.com/potngserieschall/gseriesaux/335_display_IMG_9418_800.jpg

Technical notes:
  • There are two entries without camera model in the post:
    • pwdieter is a frequent participant and I can safely assume that the picture has been shot with a G5 or a G12, but I'm not sure.
    • buy2ls has a previous entry with a G12 but, again, I'm not sure.

I can comment on pictures without camera model, but they are not participating for the top places.
    -
  • There is one entry with an image smaller than the size allowed in rule 3.
    • buy2ls with an image 516 pixels × 600 pixels

Images that are not EXACTLY 800 pixels in the longest side have been always disqualified before, so this one is disqualified.
Sorry. Be more careful the next time.
    -

Comments in the same order as the pictures were posted:

  • Kevan_G9 – G9 – Dancing in the rain...
Awesome wall and water stream framing the little dancer and her umbrella. The reflections on the wet floor are great. It is interesting to see how the girl, so small in the whole composition is still important and how her umbrella hitting the water remains the main subject of the scene. A good starting picture to push the challenge's standard to a high level.
    -
  • Maureen Souza – Pro1 – Outside Dining
The dark wooden frame in the background that isolates the garden from the bright sky, the two parasols roughly located in the upper thirds of the image, casting their shadows over the tables nicely describe a beautiful place. May I ask is your garden? I would be envious of it.
    -
  • JimAskew – G11 – Umbrella Watching!
Your photo is quite amusing :). The rescue team/firefighters form a merry group. The slanted emergency car made me smile. The two men at right draw the attention toward the woman in white clothes and, of course to her umbrella and the other umbrellas in the group at extreme right. The picture would be a lot better with a less cluttered foreground in the sidewalk.
    -
  • teekay – G3 – In The Shade
I love your IR pictures. The unusual colors or shades of gray are so interesting! In this picture, I think the vibrant bright vegetation and the darker brick road and building form a frame for the middle gray tables and parasols. The large sun spot in the foreground naturally draws the attention to the umbrellas.
I know that usually this description is not literally present while shooting, but is consequence of the good eye for light, composition and processing. Very nice picture.
    -
  • afkenner – G12 – Full Coverage
Another amusing picture. It is a really huge umbrella, although slightly dark. To be honest, the eyes naturally go to the legs rather than to the umbrella. I am curious: are the legs lighted from inside the umbrella? I can not justify its dark surface if it receives the same amount of light from the front.
I think there is even a small circle of light around the shoes. Would you care to share the lighting secrets?
    -
  • corythosaurus – G10 – Shoot-thru Inversion
I think this is a picture with a strong composition due to the camera's angle of view that shows the ribs and stretchers crossing in a pleasant pattern. The metal glare of the parts against the dark umbrella ads to the interest of this image. A nice one.
    -
  • CarloY – G9 – Umbrella's on a Night Job (aka. moonlighting)
Clever idea this one of the floating umbrella in the dark background. For me, the picture is a bit underexposed even for moonlight, I would like to see its exposure pushed a bit to make the white segments of the umbrella brighter. Nice picture though.
    -
  • buy2ls – ?? – Mini Umbrella
Undersized image (516 pixels × 600 pixels), disqualified.
    -
  • marie – Pro1 – undercover ...come rain or shine
marie, as usual, it seems as if the lady is posing for you and concentrated in holding the umbrella in the exact angle for a perfect composition. I admire your ability to find the subjects and wait until they are in the best pose for the shot. Thanks for sharing.
    -
  • Car – G7 – After Rain Dance
It is a graceful dance! I think I am reading this picture from the extreme right to the center: first the little left hand, then up following the light on her arm to the face and finally, following the direction of her attention, to the umbrella.
In that way, it seems I capture all the movement of the scene. Nice picture of a cute little girl and her little pink umbrella. Well done.
    -
  • Kshootit – G12 – What's For Dinner?
I like the shadows of branches and leaves in the parasol. there is a nice contrast with the garden background. Even looking at the umbrella as the main subject, the dark eyes of the dog almost invisible in its dark head bother me a little. Nevertheless it is nice picture and the dog seems well trained. Congratulations.
    -
  • Michael Wells – G9 – All This for a Drink?
Good capture of the paper texture and the light filtering though it. The shallow deptht of field can start to be a problem, but the red flower in sharp focus minimizes the effect. The lack of texture in the background of the same overall color nicely frames the little umbrella.
    -
  • pwdieter – ?? – clarosol
With most of the entries uploaded, I was missing a picture of a flash and reflective umbrella. Interesting use of the colored light that shapes the flash head. The radial ribs and stretchers look good, but I wonder if an angled view can be a bit more interesting.
    -
  • mrshobden – G11 – Abandoned and Forgotten .....
I like the color contrast: the leaves, bricks and the umbrella handle in one group and the contrasting blues and greens of the fabric in the other. The composition is interesting too: the wall's corner framing the umbrella in the upper right and the tube marking the diagonal. Nice picture.
    -

After several lists with many ties, I added another criteria to the usual ones: simplicity. I mean, a small amount of elements in the picture with the hope of learning from them, because my images are usually cluttered.

I list the winners below. No honorable mentions this time although a lot of images deserve one.

Michael Wells challenge #336 is all yours.
Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks to all the participants. I have had a very rewarding challenge thanks to your enthusiasm and the quality of the photos posted.

Description of the theme:
_______________

Gathering the idea from my own entry on the previous challenge, from the sun of the northern summer and the rain of the southern winter, I think that UMBRELLAS may be an interesting theme this week.

In Spanish we have different words for umbrellas used in the rain:
paraguas (literally stop water) the umbrellas used in sunny days: sombrilla (literally little shadow) and the larger ones with the same name in English and Spanish Parasol. In Spanish the two words para = stop and sol = sun provide also a literal meaning to this word.

Those of you that speak better English will find phrases to describe the different uses of umbrellas accurately.

Let your imagination fly and think about umbrellas.

Good composition and quality counts, but the most important thing is to make the umbrella or parasol the main subject of your picture.

enjoy the challenge.
