I'm going to Maui for my honeymoon in two days and will be there for two weeks. We're staying in Wailea. The strobist in me wants to haul my Elinchrom gear but that's not practical, I'm trying to pack light. Here's what I'm definitely taking:

5D2
10-22 (converted to EF, works from 14-22)
24-70L
Singh-Ray Galen Rowel ND filters (2G-SS and/or 3G-HS)
Gitzo 1541T tripod

However, I'm undecided on the following:

70-200 2.8L IS
50 1.4
28 1.8
580ex
circular polarizer

This is our first time in Hawaii. I'm not a "landscape photographer" but I want to document our trip for our families and friends. The 5D2 is great at high ISOs so should I even bother with my fast primes? How about the 70-200? I'm considering this mainly for compressed landscapes/portraits, but 70 may be enough.

I tend to overpack; I'm an it's-better-to-have-and-not-need-than-to-need-and-not-have kind of guy but I want to only take the essentials. Schlepping a lot of gear all day isn't fun.

So for those of you who have been to Maui, what did you find yourself using the most? Did you take anything and wish you hadn't?

TIA!

Honeymoon? I would honestly take an S95 or something.

If not, lose the fast primes for you 2.8 zooms and flash.

I live in Hawaii and if would like to be prepared for all occasions then pack everything. One thing are you willing to bring all your items with you to the pool or the beach unless your room has a safe?

This is a time for you to focus on your new wife, not for you to play with your hobbies. Bring a pocket camera for some memory snaps and leave the gear bag at home.

While in some ways I agree with this, it was having only a P&S on my honeymoon that inspired me to get into photography! No way I'd go on a "trip of a lifetime" and bring a $400 P&S and leave $6000 worth of gear at home. A trip like this is what I bought all this gear for in the first place!

That said, I would definitely try to keep things light. I would think your 2 zooms and maybe the 580, though I never even got my flash out when I've taken my gear on vacation.

I agree, I was talked into taking less on my honeymoon and it was my biggest photography regret.

It also depends on how into photography the spouse is, sometimes photography is something you can do together so nothing wrong with taking some DSLR gear. That said, I would keep it light and go with a pretty minimal setup. 24-70, 50 1.4 + a flash ( maybe even pick up a 270 flash to keep it even lighter. If you like wide I would also take the UW. Its not like you have to have it all with you all the time. I would also take an S95 or other small camera in addition to the 5d2

I forgot the P&S is good to have to take to dinner and such.

I just don't get going on a trip that costs $10k or more and leaving your nice gear at home to bring only a P&S. Yeah, keep it down, but don't leave it all. If I were the OP, I'd bring the 10-22 and 24-70 and call it good. It's no honeymoon and no Hawaii, but the last vacation I went on was Vegas and I only used my 24-105 and a borrowed 10-22. We brought a P&S to dinner with us. I travel light, but I'm not leaving my camera at home when I go on an expensive vacation. As long as you don't put photography before the "job at hand", your wife will appreciate all the great pictures and memories you'll capture on your trip.

Edit: Just noticed the special note about the 5D and converted 10-22. I'd probably just bring the 24-70. I understand 24 is pretty wide on FF. I'd be tempted by the 70-200, but it draws too much attention and is too much mass and size in addition to the already heavy 24-70.

I don't have a S95 but we will have a basic P&S

Rooms safes are generally pretty small so whatever I dont take with me will be packed inside luggage.

My wife saw this and laughed. She said, "are you kidding? Bring the best camera you have!" lol We see it the other way. We don't just want "snaps" from our honeymoon to look back on. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip so we want to document it as such.

Exactly. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this mindset. My wife isn't a photographer but she loves photography.

Yeah I'm really leaning toward just the 24-70 and 10-22 (and the P&S). 24 is definitely wide on FF but 15 is awesome :)

Just remember to keep your gear very close to you since you are unfamiliar with the environment . Big lens/camera will attract unwanted attention amongst all tourists. Would hate to have that happen while you are on your honeymoon. Now go enjoy and have a great time!

I lived in Oahu and been to Maui several times. What you can expect is nice weather and great places to take photos.

Circular Polarizer is a must if you are doing any type of landscaping during the middle of the day. It Can be very bright at time. I think your 10-22 and 24-70L will be all you need but I think bringing a flash with you could be a great idea.
