Maui is the best! You're staying on a great part of the island. Be sure and hit Ulua Beach, it's right in the area.

As far as gear, as someone above said, 24-105, CPL and a flash.

Aloha and congratulations.

Maui is No Ka 'Oi

I'm accross the canal just south of Ballard, the town Seattle usurped in 1907.

My wife saw this and laughed. She said, "are you kidding? Bring the best camera you have!" lol We see it the other way. We don't just want "snaps" from our honeymoon to look back on. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip so we want to document it as such.

Shoot, you hit the jackpot in a major way. Congrats!

Last time I was in Maui, I brought everything and really only used the 24-70 and the 580exII.

I'm actually heading to Maui next weekend as well. I've decided to bring just my camera, filter, flash, and 17-50mm. I'm planning on staying in the Hyatt in Lahaina. How is this city compared to Wailea? Any suggestions for places to check out for photo ops and which beaches/restaurants are a must visit?

Lahaina is nice but Wailea is the most upscale area of the Island with possibly the best beach on the Island. Lahaina is a bit touristy. Don't miss the Lahaina Grill. Hawaii has photo ops at every turn and no matter where you stay driving the road to Hana at least once is a must do.

The Road to Hana and Lahaina are my two recommended places. If anyone need any additional camera gears or lens for rent, I recommend Hawaii Photo Rental. They just opened a new store in Maui..http://www.hawaiicamera.com/ (external link). Mahalo

Get this book....we had one of the early editions when we went to Maui for the 1st time, was a ton of help and is really popular, even if you've been there before.

I took the (GF at the time) to Hawaii (Waikiki) last year. I brought the 10-22 and 24-105 and some filters. The zoom stayed on the lens 95% of the trip, and never once did I wish I had brought more, not even a flash. We also had a P&S for dinner and a boat trip or anything involving lots of water.

My only suggestion would be an underwater P&S or throw away camera for snorkeling and such. We saw the same fish face to face that we saw at the Aquarium :) I plan on replacing my P&S with an underwater camera to "kill 2 birds with one stone"

Id say take the 10-22 and 24-70 and call it a day.

Not popular with the locals with good reason. This book encourages trespassing so I'd say avoid it simply because there is so much free information on the internet. There were numerous threads about this on Trip Advisor in the past which may still be availible.
I will never support some one that encourages people to break the law.
If you don't agree that's ok just don't expect any help if you get in trouble and the locals see it.
FWIW there are far better maps available for free on the Island and the best information this author has (IMO) is the air photos of the hotels on their web site which you can also view for free. ;)

....just go to Amazon and let the reviews speak for themselves. The book clearly states instances where you will be on, or have to cross through, private property to get somewhere, and if you aren't a complete moron about it, you'll never have a problem. And when you read about some of the unbelieveable things you get to see if you're willing to take a 10 minute walk, which might include spending 2 minutes walking across the corner of some guys abandon field, you won't worry about it.

Some of those locals should realize the book really talks up certain LOCAL places to eat and shop, places the typical tourist would never find on their own. A certain banana bread stand in west Maui comes to mind.... ;)

And yes, there is plenty of free info on the 'net, but all in one place that can be read on the long flight over there??

Thanks for all of the input. I forgot to mention that I'll be bringing a waterproof "case" for my P&S.

I decided to go with the original plan: just the 10-22 and 24-70. It'll be perfect. I even made a new padded insert for one of my messenger bags that fits the setup perfectly. The 10-22 is in the little pocket on the left:

Looks like a plan! Nothing worse than schlepping too much gear on vacation. Are you staying at the FS? If so it's an awesome property.

yeah that finally sunk in when I was walking around Chicago with a gripped 30D, 24-70, 70-200 2.8, 50, flash and some other stuff. The bag wasn't big but it got heavy after a while. We're staying at the Marriott in Wailea.

You will be in easy walking distance to some great restaurants and shopping. The shops at Wailea are right next to your hotel. If your wife is any thing like mine you better hide the CC and steer clear of that place!
The beach is small but fantastic. Head down to the opposite end in front of the FS by the rocks for some good snorkeling. It's worth walking past the FS to the Fairmont as well. There are some great spots along the walk way to shoot as the sun goes down.

Do you have the neck strap? even though i hate it it came into ALOT of use at Maui, i think you may want to consider it.

Man that went by fast, Maui was great! I'm definitely glad I brought my tripod, TC-80N3, and flash. I only used the 10-22 a few times but would've been fine without it.

I haven't used a normal neck strap in like 4-5 years. If I do use a strap it's a sling style like the Black Rapid but I mainly only use that when shooting something like a wedding where I have two bodies. Most other times I shoot out of a bag and neck/shoulder straps just get in my way.

For those curious, this was my loadout:
the insert allowed me plenty of room for other stuff in the bag like souvenirs and whatnot

For more adventurous hikes I just put the insert in a backpack and put the tripod in the side drink holder pockets:
