I called Sigma earlier today. The rep said they'll be "formally announcing" the 50-150 OS at CES and should be releasing it later this year with no set date. Hope it's true this time around.

Well so much for that info. I wonder what the story is for this lens. Im still going to hold out for it though. 70 is too long on the short end for me.

*Sigh* Yeah.. I'm about ready to sell mine too for that very reason.

I'm just really hopeful that they address focusing consistencies with it too. I've had maybe 3 copies of the HSMII version and each one has had a front focusing issue, one throughout the entire range, the other two with a trouble spot.

I've been back and forth with the newer 17-50 numerous times as well, but haven't had ANY problems with it at all. Have also seen significantly fewer AF complaints about it and the rest of their newer lenses too, such as the 70-200 OS.

Along with the Tokina 11-16mm and any 17-5Xmm variant, this telephoto zoom would provide APS-C sensor users with a complete set of f/2.8 zooms.

I like f/2.8 enough to keep a 17-50 (17-55) lens for a main walk-around/ all-purpose as opposed to using a 24-105, 28-135, etc

Hear hear.

I use my 17-55 way more than my 15-85....

Does anyone know if this lens was on display at CES in the sigma booth?

It was not. Only the 180 macro and mft pancakes were on the floor according to a buddy of mine.

Aw crap. I was hoping they'd made it smaller. It's almost 8" long and 3lbs (197mm / 1340g)

The MTFs for this thing are amazing. It looks like it will have great image quality. Hopefully its a good bit cheaper than the 70-200 OS once it hits the streets (looks like maybe $300 cheaper?) The Sigma 70-200 OS is really very good though, under-rated lens imho.

MTF also shows that it's better at the long end than the short. Never seen that before.

Not too stoked for the size, but hopefully the images will change my mind.

With 70-200 currently 1399 - 100 = $1299
This at the proposed $1099 - 100 in the future = $999 seems reasonable.
Looks like "list" on the japanese site is 132,000 JPY / 80 = $1650 for the 50-150. So, well below the "list" on the 70-200.

April 4, 2012 – PRESS SUMMARY - Sigma Corporation of America, is pleased to announce that its newly upgraded 50-150mm F2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM telephoto lens is now available for the street price of $1,099.
The 50-150mm F2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM telephoto lens is the successor to the 50-150mm F2.8 APO EX DC II HSM. The updated lens now features Sigma’s own proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) technology, which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The lens design utilizes an inner-focusing and inner-zooming system that provides convenient handling and this, along with the OS feature, makes it favorable for high-performance, handheld, close-up photography. Additionally, the Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing, while allowing full-time manual focus capability.

The Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM Canon mounts will be available next week, while the Nikon and Sigma mounts are expected to be available by the end of April.

Six SLD glass elements provide exceptional corrections for all types of aberrations and provide high-quality imagery throughout the zoom range. It also has a rounded, nine-blade diaphragm that creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.

The lens’ Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and ensures sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum apertures. The addition of Sigma’s 1.4x EX DG APO and 2x EX DG APO teleconverters produce a 70-210mm F4 autofocus telephoto zoom lens and a 100-300mm F5.6 autofocus telephoto lens, respectively.
