Hmmm thanks Rob. I think I'd use the spot metering and camera profiles the most. This one is the D version without the PW module built in, but I use sky ports anyway.

Is the Sekonic 758 a massive upgrade from the 358? I currently have a 358 but there's a 758 on the forums ridiculously cheap. I'd be out maybe $100 in the upgrade.

i'll take your 358 if you get rid of it :p

Then I'd jump on it. :D

I'm taking my white shoot throughs with me to the grave.

Yes, i still use them, usually in a shoot-through mode over head, either camera left 45 down, or straight over camera down.

They are much easier to use and usually a safe-mode for me, great light, no fuss. I haven't used silver much, i remember using them gripped up in the ramparts during a concert with some cinefoil to hide them and give me "stage" type lighting, but that was really about it. I've tried using them for rim and didn't like the effect too much personally.

I still use a silver umbrella quite a bit. No reason not to use them.

I particularly like them for fill.

Mine are sitting in a box and have been for a long time now. With brolly boxes and the Softlighter which have better control of light spill (especially when compared to a shoot-through) and are just as easy to set up as umbrellas, I have no need for standard umbrellas anymore.

for me, i haven't use umbrella for like 1 year by now. but after watching american next top model season 16. i just want to try to use it now:D. well as a fill with bd/softbox as main at the same angle (not crosslighting or whatsoever)

Umbrellas can be very good tools but like any tool it has limitations, strengths and weaknesses.

If we forget about all the little opinions, preferences and nit picks about modifiers, the reality is that professionals are using umbrellas every day of the weak, by choice, and getting fantastic results.

There's nothing that says that a softbox is better unless it's the better tool for the job but as general blanket statements I tend to disagree.

It's very much like the argument about whether you can do full length work with smallish light boxes. Many will immediately tell you you can't do it, while others will do it all the time and do it well without a problem.

Umbrellas are convenient and powerful tools when used correctly and appropriately. :D

Ok, umbrella haters... let me have it. ;)

BTW, ideally you want the fill to be coming from camera position, on axis.

The main thing I don't like about umbrellas is spill. If you're working in a limited space with walls around, an umbrella can create a lot of unwanted spill off walls/ceilings giving a flatter look with less contrast. If you've got a huge open studio then that's not nearly as much of a problem.

That and they don't do very well in the wind on location. :)
