Cheers for the assurance, I've got the 220v version too, much better build than the dlite :)

Well I guess I won't ask if you like the deep throat octa then :o

I have one Dlite. The BXRi is bi voltage. You can use 110 (america) or 220 (everywhere else it seems)

Damn! that is in Wisconsin?

yes.. the falls extend up about 6 feet higher than her head. It's off a lagoon; seems to have water running all the time.

So what is this "character" that the DO has over a non-deep octa? I can appreciate that there is a time and place for using an octabox with a grid and without, but as far as deep vs. non-deep, is it more of an efficiency thing, or is there a real difference in light shape/falloff/etc?

That's a great question.

For me, that character might also be called 'punch'. There is an interesting and attractive balance between soft diffused light and a more contrasty, harder (less diffused) light, and by feathering and working with that contrast and the falloff from center to edge, you can get some absolutely beautiful light.

That's not to say that you can't use the same techniques and get gorgeous light with other modifiers. You can. I found that as I trained my eye to see and recognize different qualities of light, I could more easily see that punch. It's most noticeable when you use only the inner layer of diffusion but there are some other combinations that give similar results.

While I've never done a real world comparison, I would guess that if you took a standard 39" octa and a 39" deep octa you would in fact see a difference. Most people find it pleasing and some could care less and are perfectly happy with standard octa's. If soft light is all someone cares about then I see no need to get the deep octa and that's an important thing to consider. It is right for you? Only you know that.

It should be noted that the quality or character that I see as 'punchy' is lost once you pull back more than about twice the diameter of the box. Beyond that the benefit is a focused and efficient light source but that's about it. The same is true of a beauty dish. Use it up close and you get that really great beauty dish character. Pull it back and it's just a large reflector producing hard light.

Hmm... these creative light modifiers are growing on me... for the price of a 39" rotalux DO you can get a similar octa and a 50° grid... curse you all, I'm trying to save for a BD....

you're in the wrong thread if you thought you were done buying gear, these guys are very convincing

Ah, that totally makes sense. In essence, a deep octa then gives a more "beauty dish" like quality to the light, at a price point (and with portability) that is much more reasonable than a similarly *sized* beauty dish. So rather than getting a 45" BD, a 39" DO could give similar results when used properly.

Okie dokie.... $350 more to add to the list..... :-P

Shot with an ebay strip +grid, reflector underneath, and a BD feathering off the BG and her hair (Which in hindsight should of touched more of her hair and more of the BG but space was limited.) oh my avatar too was shot with the same strip amongst other things.

I think the strip cost me like maybe 80$ total? with grid n all ? You're using Eli lights mate, just pop in a deflector and you can compensate for most softboxes deficiencies (other then color casts), its the BD and special modifiers that are worth shelling into imo.

Oh and mine came with Flaps so a certain someone won't have any problems.

Heh, i think me being here helps offset certain high-rollers, you can do things on the cheap too :D

grrr the slightly open mouth is bugging me again i should fix that.

Feel free to call me Case.
