the speed ring does not lock down tightly. when you put it in, twist it, and then slide the lock over, the modifier is still able to wiggle around.

i need to get some big number labels for mine.... and brand stickers too. :-)

Wiggle around? WTF are you guys doing? I mean the modifier just stays there are you guys shaking the stands when shooting? I just dont get this wiggling thing.

I used white gaffers tape and just wrote on that.

Main problem with the Elinchrom mount is after-market speedrings, especially cheaper ones. Rotalux and the 1 Chimera ring I have lock perfectly and don't wriggle at all.

I still don't know why they tried to make it so complicated one, the Hensel one is so basic but it's absolute genius.

I find that to be mostly true although I do have one Eli reflector that's wobbly as heck. I think I can give the mounts "hooks" on the reflector a little bend to get it from being wobbly but it doesn't bother me in the least so I haven't bothered fixing it. :)

My mannequin toppled over and landed on one of my varistar reflectors (the white 135? degree ones) and I managed to bend it back into shape by pressing it against the hard floor and just fiddling a bit. It's not QUITE as smooth as the new one but it still works fine.

For the extra $50 or so the Chimera ring is well worth the money (if you can find them).

It's not just about the fit of the bayonet. The locking collar doesn't really lock. It just slides over and will just as easily slide the other way if there is friction or if the material from a lightbox grabs or rubs against the collar.

I could make it happen with an Elinchrom modifier too. If I rotate the modifier clockwise it won't happen but if I rotate the modifier counter-clockwise then there's a very good chance that it's going to spin the collar in the reverse (unlocking) direction and if you're not careful it will then rotate the entire bayonet the additional amount to release it from the strobe's mount.

In normal use I don't have to force it to happen. It just does, and it happens with any or all of my RX's. The funniest part is that the D-Lite it incorporates a different method of locking by using a 'switch' of sorts, and it's rock solid with no chance of being pushed in the wrong direction and unlocking.

I never quite trust the locking mechanism on my Elinchrom's...

After my beauty dish went crashing to the floor, even though the BXRi was locked off.

I have even had to open up the jaws on the beauty dish to stop me having to get the beauty dish in a headlock just to get it on the elinchrom head...

It is a third party head though.

The hensel one is right up there with the profoto. The annoyance(genius) is in the simplicity.

I've always liked Hensel strobes and the Hensel mount. I ended up going with Elinchrom because of the modifiers. The first Elinchrom lightbox I saw really got me excited but like most people, I found out that there was no way to use Elinchrom modifiers on Hensel heads, so the choice was simple.

This is an issue I never have to worry about because my modifiers are always locked. Don't see much point in making a Rotalux modifier rotate freely. I can see a rectangular/square softbox being set that way but then, once I have the orientation of the softbox set, I just lock it in place also as there would be no need to adjust the rotation anymore. :)

Of course, but it doesn't change the fact that it's another bonehead design. ;)

I don't think it is but everybody is entitled to his opinions. :)
I think the PCB/Balcar mount is even worse. ;)
