I'll be staying with Elinchrom for quite some time to come. :) I find it interesting that some folks here are thinking of jumping ship. But hey - everyone's needs are different. I haven't a single issue with Elinchrom right now... everything works just as i could wish. Never had a bayonet issue or anything along those lines. The gear works and that's all i need, especially with weddings.

Competitively priced, awesome feature set, durable. Done deal for me.

Exactly right.

I plan to stay with Elinchrom.

And wish for Profoto.

:)

Also exactly right!

I told myself after I talked myself out of the last 2 Profoto steals (and that was after multiple pms with Rob (Conner) and Dennis both convincing me) that I'll be Elinchrom for life unless I need something they don't offer.

Hey, the Pro-B recycles in 1.8 secs!

Air is pretty sweet, but as you said: packs that make full use of it are just crazy expensive. I was lucky enough to pick up 3 Air transceivers for about $350 all together ;)

The Eli Digital RX 1200 recycles in 1.7 secs. The Profoto Acute2 1200 in 1.5 secs. 1.8 secs of the Pro-B2 is still slower than those two. ;)

The Verso 1200 recycles in 1.5 secs. :D

Just because I'm whining about the mount doesn't mean that I'm even close to switching.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not being entirely positive about a product or brand and just because there are flaws or what I consider a poor design, it doesn't amount to anything that would make me switch to another brand.

I've always believed that the only place to go from Elinchrom is to either Profoto or Broncolor and I don't see either of those in my immediate future.

:D

In the end, there's nothing like profoto's mount. Their mount is reason enough to upgrade lighting, as it's not only 100% simple/secure, but it also allows you to "focus" the light within the reflector/modifier.

Lets hope Elinchrom realizes part of this and continues to push forward on the new "Zoom" heads then.

Better stay off the used markets then, theres always the risk of a "great deal" popping up and making you buy something you hadn't planned for at all! Execpt for Leo cause he buys new, like a boss.

pst, Leo, i think in the end v1 should of been the proper one, this thread really flies far too fast for anyone to notice something so subtle lol.

Hi Case,

I always buy new as well. Very rarely will I buy a used item.

Even if I got a great deal on some used Profoto's, it wouldn't make me switch. I'm still contemplating grabbing a Compact 600 or two but beyond that I don't see anything serious happening. ;)

Hi Rob, I'm kinda curious as to your reasoning for wanting to buy new, I always bought used, i can only think of few items i bought new and it didn't make any big difference.

The only bad experience ive had buying used is those 1dsIIs, which i have managed to find a decent one, it has a few dead pixels, but LR3 maps them out, i also made a PS action to map them out if i really wanna use DPP for a shot.

my end game as far as lighting really is to buy RX's. computer/trigger control of my lights is all I want.

Fixed it for yah :)

My endgame is split, for personal use, RXs are fine, if i'm really lucky maybe a Ranger. For work, the endgame is Profotos and set-up a small rental house.

My used purchase experiences have been nothing but great. There can actually be a benefit to buying used sometimes (other than saving cash, of course) in that if what you're buying has worked well for the previous owner and he hasn't had issues with it, chances are it'll work for a long time.
Had plenty of new electronics shipped DOA or break within a few days of use ;)

Why do you want to use DPP if you have LR3?

LR3 is a recent addition for me, LR2 was slow compared to DPP and i never liked the colors.

LR3 is interesting though, the camera profiles are pretty close, its much faster then LR2, however i'm so used to my workflow with DPP that i can go through hundreds of photos much faster, rate, batch edit then batch JPG. Its also more limiting in the number of things i can do so it speeds up the overall process.

When i did a comparison by taking the same raw shot and pushing it through DPP, then doing it afresh through LR2, the DPP JPG came out much better for me, with LR3 i did the same comparison and its much closer but i still prefer the DPP JPG at the end of the conversion.

Of course i do slip the jpgs through LR at some point for the web galleries, or to mess with split toning or other neat effects, but its not usually part of my developing workflow. Thats mostly for event photos, on the flip side if i need high-end results, its DPP->16bit tiffs with no sharpening straight into photoshop. Honestly, considering its free, DPP is amazing. One of the reasons ive stuck with canon when i sold my 5d1 and was thinking of going to the D700.

Exactly, plus i'm very anal when i buy used so i inspect everything very closely, there are risks but knowing about them can lead to safer purchases. Even with the horrible condition 1dsiis i got, i was able to minimize the loss by having taken the proper precautions like buying from a safer place and inspecting the items right away with no shame in asking for a refund if a problem is found. Plus, sometimes you can even turn a profit ;)

One of the best deals i got so far was a modded 580EX1 for i think like 200$ and it functions exactly like new but Better! since it has an audio jack modded in.

I should mention at this point though that i prefer to make my purchases Locally, FM/Potn are decent places and i have purchased one thing off ebay without problems, but it never feels quite as safe even if most people on FM are good about offering refunds if its needed.

Personally, i think a rental shop is one of the best businesses, the equipment not only keeps its value so well but turns a longterm profit. I would love to be able to run one over here but there are already quite a few well established ones, so i'd have to offer things they don't.... oh... like maybe elinchroms ;)
