ah a day off of work. shooting some editorial stuff at my daughters school today.

my end game as far as lighting really is to buy RX's. computer/trigger control of my lights is all I want.

Only RX I really want is the 1200

When you fire it, it looks something like this. (external link)

Exactly, plus i'm very anal when i buy used so i inspect everything very closely, there are risks but knowing about them can lead to safer purchases. Even with the horrible condition 1dsiis i got, i was able to minimize the loss by having taken the proper precautions like buying from a safer place and inspecting the items right away with no shame in asking for a refund if a problem is found. Plus, sometimes you can even turn a profit ;)

One of the best deals i got so far was a modded 580EX1 for i think like 200$ and it functions exactly like new but Better! since it has an audio jack modded in.

I should mention at this point though that i prefer to make my purchases Locally, FM/Potn are decent places and i have purchased one thing off ebay without problems, but it never feels quite as safe even if most people on FM are good about offering refunds if its needed.

Yeah. Just be mindful of who you buy from and you'll be fine 99% of the time.

LR3 is a recent addition for me, LR2 was slow compared to DPP and i never liked the colors.

Ahh, never really like the DPP, found it annoying to use. Plus LR2 was quite quick to use. :)

I cant afford it. I can rent it. The one I was looking at was slow to recycle :(
It would be a good BG light but might as well have it all matching.

I had a friend who quit photography and had a 1200RX for sale amongst other things but i couldn't afford it, i did grab some of her lightstands and a nice big reflector :D

Nowadays, i'd prefer a Ranger to a 1200RX : 8.5stops vs 6, portability vs recycle time.

Heh, that hasn't changed in many many many years. I don't have a problem with it, i do have a problem with LR's layout ;) so to each their own i guess.

I guess, I also like how LR (actually most Adobe products) work together. Like you can export from one software directly into another. :)

It's also a lot more expensive! :)

That's true...but it does give you the option of using either AC or battery with the same pack. :)

My used purchase experiences have been nothing but great. There can actually be a benefit to buying used sometimes (other than saving cash, of course) in that if what you're buying has worked well for the previous owner and he hasn't had issues with it, chances are it'll work for a long time.
Had plenty of new electronics shipped DOA or break within a few days of use ;)

I agree. If I knew the person I'd be buying used gear from, I wouldn't have second thoughts about buying used. But for the things I want to buy, buying used means buying from some stranger. None of my acquaintances have anything that I'd want to buy used off of them. It's usually the other way around. They want to buy my used gear. LOL :D

I don't think there's anything wrong with not being entirely positive about a product or brand and just because there are flaws or what I consider a poor design, it doesn't amount to anything that would make me switch to another brand.

:D

I will not speak ill of Elinchrom. It might jeopardize my fanboi status.

The Ranger RX is only .2 seconds slower than the 1200RX as far as recycle time is concerned so the portability really outways the recycle time difference. And, of course, the Ranger RX also the flash duration advantage, especially with the A head. :)

...Oh, i thought the difference in recycle time was much larger then .2 seconds.

Hm, what about using the Ranger in the studio ? I don't imagine it works on AC, so swapping out batteries and having them charging on their own ? To keep things going you'd need what 3 or 4 batteries ?

Theres something about the Ranger that keeps me interested, if the money comes around i'd definitely have to take a hard look and see if theres anything comparable on Profoto's side, and do my homework, but for now the miniVag supplements my location needs nicely. A RX600 wouldn't be a bad thing to go with it.

Bron never really interested me, not sure why. The things it sells aren't important for me. A dMF would be more appealing to me if a bag of cash landed on my lap, but then i'd probably wake up and have a grumpy day.

Now..Briese.... Mmmmm.

For the price, there isn't.

I never got the Bron itch either (let's not talk about the Para though).

Speaking of Briese, there was a really tempting deal on a Briese head with flash tube and Profoto plug. But Briese Focus prices make Leo's purchases seem sane.

The Ranger can work off the AC in the studio but it plugs into the RX port so you need to use a universal trigger, slave or a sync cable to fire it.
