Idea of no stands is great. However the ceilings in the studio are not very high, ~3m max. With the rails I can't get the strobes higher than ~2m (the rails take up space + count in the size of softbox). Its okay to take portraits of people if they are sitting on a chair. Forget about them standing, not really possible to get the light overhead then.. Another thing is that in the studio right in the middle of the paper roll is a projector that prevents the rails to be moved anywhere close to the middle of the paper roll. :)

/rant :)

Possibly with higher ceilings and no projector in middle of the room it would be much better setup.

Considering the release order, the 5D3 is next.

7D-> 1d4 -> 1dx -> ? 5d3. either that or something replacing the 5d line like that mythical 3d.

But I am not a fan of the 5D II AF

I don't shoot things that move really fast (birds, action-sports, etc.) so I quickly got used to the 5DII AF system. I think it works better with some lenses than with others. ... With mine, it seems OK. There have been a few times when I had trouble getting AF to register while using my 70-200, but those were all in terrible lighting conditions where the subjects lacked much contrast. I tend to shoot with the 24-70 most, which never has AF problems. If I shot a lot of moving stuff, or if I spent a lot of time in dark environments, my experiences might be different. I don't see myself changing bodies any time soon.

I was using the 70-200 not the greatest light. The lights were turned off and all that was lighting up the subject was the modeling light. It was a studio and they were not moving.

So it must have been the perfect storm of bad situations. I used it twice though

Hi June!

Hi Mike !!
So, are you saying that you had problems with the 70-200? Or didn't have problems with the 70-200? BTW, I have the First version of the 70-200, not the newer one. I hear the newer one focuses better.

We are in trouble then  I have the MK II
Yeah i was using the 70-200 MK II

I think its 49% my fault because the modeling lights are on proportional so they were not super bright. I like the joystick to pick my focus point too.

I shot with the 5D classic for several years before going 1Ds II and then 1Ds III. The 5D worked fine, nothing stellar but overall good. Shot lots of people, lots of moving stuff (kids), used fast aperture glass, low light, it all worked fine. I only used the center focus point.

Now that I'm used to a 1 series, I don't think I could go back.

June, this guy is too good for us mere mortals.

He looks down his nose at us!

Even if you had a 1 series, I wouldn't talk to you unless you had all L glass.

I am not a professional photographer, and could never justify the expenditure for a 1-series body. As you said, the 5D original body served you well, until you upgraded. I found the 5D II to be very reasonably priced, and it serves my purposes quite well. I'll stick with this until it dies on me. I'm not the kind of person that feels a need to upgrade to "newer" equipment, until I experience a bona-fide need to do so.

Bottom line, my 5D II will still crank out pictures that are just as good the day I opened the box, whether a 5D III is announced or whether Santa Claus leaves a 1D X under the tree (that aint gonna happen ). ... Newer equipment releases will not magically make current equipment perform any worse.

If I were ever to earn a living from behind the lens, I would start to consider the added benefits of a 1-series. Besides, I'm not sure my hands are big enough to use a 1-series comfortably. ... I'm on the petite side ;).

Used 1DsII is in the same price range as the 5DII and IMO a vastly superior buy for all but extremely low light work.

I always (except for my Mark IV as it was a steal) buy the last gen 1series (I have a 1DII, 1DsII and a 1DIV) as they're always the best value for money IMO.
