It would never replace a computer for me. The i7 MBP + cinema display looks awfully sexy.

The cinema display does look really cool :)

Edit - actually all this is typed on iPad :) still on holidays away from my laptop

Im looking to take my D-Lite IT 4 (2 of them) portable. Would yall suggest the Vagabond II or the Tronix Explorer XT and why? Other than the two cable connects on the Tronix Explorer XT i dont really see a difference.

Hey Octowl, I don't have the D-Lite's myself but the general consensus around here is because they're bi-voltage the Tronix series suits them a lot better.

If you quickly search the front few pages of the lighting forum, Robert (TMR Design) has actually reviewed two of the newer products from Innovatronix (Tronix) and they're working well with the D-LITE4.

thanks buddy thats what i thought when i researched a bit but just wanted others opinions. id rather get what works better than what works but has risks. :p now just to decide what Tronix product id like to get. the XT or XT SE or XT3 (coming soon). so many choices in life.

The Explorer XT will work with one D-Lite 4 but not two. The XT is no longer in production. The XT SE was designed to properly handle bi-voltage power supplies but it will still only work with one D-Lite 4 and will glitch with two.

The newer Explorer Mini and the Explorer XT3 that is about to be released will work with multiple bi-voltage strobes.

The Vagabond Mini does work with the D-Lite 4it but can produce the infamous Elinchrom E4 error code indicating 'charge fault' where the strobe times out while waiting for the voltage from the inverter to stabilize.

In general, when you get the error, you can just turn the unit off and then back on and it should work, but there are no guarantees and PCB will not support the use of third party strobes with the VML.

I'm actually going to take my 2x600RX over to "plusnqs" studio sometime soon and test recycle with his VML etc on a 240V monoblock. WIll be interesting if it's any different.

That was very informative, I appreciate it. Just so I know I comprehended everything...I should wait for the XT3 which comes out later this year if I want to use both my D-Lite 4 IT simultaneously even when on 2.0 or full power correct?
Also why will the XT/XT SE only work with one d-lite 4 when it has two plugs?

You don't have to do that. :D

I'm testing a VML right now, doing pop tests and videos demonstrating recycle times and comparisons to the Explorer Mini.

I'm just a little curious if the mains voltage of the strobe effects its performance on a battery. I assume not, but it's still intriguing.

By performance, do you mean recycle time?

Wow, Sheldon.. pretty cool. You mean you didn't have a model and your lighting gear with you?

He's just lazy.

Or you could sell the 1D IV, keep a little cash and buy a 1Ds III. :)

I only suggest that about a thousand times...

Now with added bokeh. (Good lenses are irrelevant, apparently. Just add bokeh and textures in post. It's the in thing.)

I recently acquired a 230v VML inverter that I hoped would improve (slightly) recycle times of my Einsteins while also providing a more multi-voltage strobe friendly power source for non-PCB lights. The performance of the 230v inverter has been quite disappointing. I started a thread over on PCB's tech forum that discusses this issue:

http://www.paulcbuff-techforum.com …210fac566ef3cf6c04a52f963 (external link)

Recycle times are unacceptably long when the 230v inverter is "cold". Once it warms up from use (I found that requires about 18 pops; see the Excel chart in the above-referenced thread), recycle times improve dramatically. Based on PCB's comments, it appears an update to the 230v inverter either has been or will be requested of the manufacturer. I'm sending mine back to PCB.
