I posted one picture last night in the 60D thread. This was my first serious attempt at shooting fireworks. I took about 160 shots in under 20 minutes with my 60D and 15-85 using a tripod. It was getting darker so the shots were done between F29 and F11 at ISO 100 and between 2 and 3 seconds using the 2 second delay on the shutter. I misstimed some and some were out of frame, but here are the 41 best ...

This is kind of like going out and shooting one good round of golf. It is encouraging ...

I lightened (about +15) the shadows a touch, cropped, and sharpened. In a few of the shots you can see lights from houses on the hill in the background. It wasn't that dark when I started, but using F29 ... I made it dark.

Why such high fstops?

The pictures were taken at Cazenovia Lake, New York and the fireworks were shot over the lake with a relatively uninteresting background. Therefore I decided to darken the background as much as possible. It was easy to bring out the fireworks with about +15 highlights in PSE9 which still kept the background black.

Only the very first shots were at F29. Most were taken around F11 ... which is what was recommended several places on this forum.

Did I mention that these were shot on a non-permanent nor really stable dock ... Next time I will get a remote shutter.

Bill,

yours look very similar to mine. Was unsure of your using the 2-second time, but without a release it's probably best. With a release, I was trying to time the explosion and actuate the shutter at just that time. 2.5 seconds on the shutter at ISO 100 and f/11 seemed to work pretty well.

Nice shots you got.
