I've had a Canon 7D which I really love. But I have always wanted to go full frame. Amazon had a good price on a Canon 5D Mark II, so I ordered it and plan to sell the 7D and other items to pay for it.

However, when I went to use the 5D MKII, I noticed that the colors were no where near as accurate as the 7D. They are lighter and not as vivid. Is it a setting that I am missing? I have the standard setting exactly as I do on the 7D, with the sharpening being the only thing raised, as I don't liike doing PP sharpening. Al other settings are as the 7D. Yet the colors seem not as true.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I can't get this to equal the 7D, much as I like full-frame, I plan to return this to Amazon.

Thanks.

Are you comparing the same 2 picture styles, like faithful? Are you using the screens on the camera to compare, or comparing raw results on a monitor?

The 7D has a new color metering system, which can help, but I found that the 5D2 still has a slight improvement on color tones when I did my ISO and IQ mini-reviews.

Also remember that the 5D2, at least again in my testing, seems to produce a brighter, lighter exposure than the 7D. The two are very close IQ-wise in my tests, and in no way so vastly different as others seem to think, so you should be able to tweak the 5D to the point you like what you get. The 5D2 is about 1 stop better in ISO handling at the top end, doesn't have the dusty noise at the lower ISOs like the 7D (which really doesn't have an impact anyways), and is more forgiving with exposure issues.

i basically shot a picture on standard on both cameras of the same thing.. at the same shutter speed and aperture etc... my t2i produces a more vividi and colorful tone whereas my 5d mark ii produces a picture which isn't as vivid... ill try faithful out tho

Viewing on the cameras, or viewing the images side by side on the computer?

It's quite possible the Picture Styles on the 7D are set differently, internally.

Different lenses will also render colors and contrast differently.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Yes, a good friend who uses IdmkIV's has the 85L and the 85 1.8 (recent purchase) and gets color that is closer to what he sees with the 1.8 lens on his bodies.

Sorry, can't help but to be sarcastic in this situation :)

You can't complain because it is "Full Frame". 35mm is the end all, be all in photography, don't you know that?

Seriously though, I do hope you get it worked out because that is a lot of money for a camera.

Cheers,

David

Are you shooting raw or jpeg? If you are shooting raw ignore the lcd and look at the histogram.

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

I am using the same lens on both, the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L. Also, I am shooting in jpeg. Both the image on the LCD and my monitor, after uploading the files, look less vivid on the 5D MkII than the 7D.

I am using the Standard picture setting on both cameras with the Sharpness all the way up to 6 and all the rest on 0.

I'm curious to see photo's side by side. Can you post a few to judge?

Best Regards,

David

I just don't remember this, I remember the colors being a bit different between the two, but that could have been white balance and/or the default picture styles are indeed configured a bit differently.

Once I set a custom white balance equally between the two, they normalized a bit more, with just the slight hue/tone differences between them. It certainly wasn't enough to be a major issue of concern, it was quite easy to make a custom picture style in either one to match what I wanted, then in DPP, I could undo the picture style values or tweak them further.

I too would be interested in the 2 identical exposed samples from each.

shoot in RAW
the crop body will require much more sharpening (over sharpening will create contrast differences)
shoot both in neutral picture style with sharpening set to zero
set the WB to sunny, NOT AUTO WB
shoot them at the same ISO (100), SS and FStop
upload the files into DPP
change the picture style to Faithfull
sharpen them to 3
check the difference

I've got the 40D, 7D and 5DII, along with the 24-105
