I just picked up a used s90 and very disappointed in the quality. I am actually considering selling it for an s95 now. But, I don't want something that is just a little bit better. I'd rather buy something video specific.

If video is your priority, get a video specific solution.

A still camera with add on video isn't video specific..

However the S95 offers 720P video(HD) 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps vs the S90, 640 x 480 @ 30fps

The S95 offers decent video, compared to a digital still camera.
There's no digital camera with a larger than average sensor, which also offers 1080p video.
You can settle for Sony's WX10, or go with a video camera instead.

You would be happier with the lx5 if video is your priority. Slightly bigger though. I moved from the G11 to the lx5 more so for the video and am quite happy with it.
I would say S95 video is only a bit superior to S90.

Hi Tom - As a newbie to the forum, you give no hint as to your level of expertise in either video or still photography. For the record, the S90 is in very select company at the top of the P&S pantheon. Even now, superseded, I think it's still in the top five or six. My daughter has one, and it certainly holds its own against my G10.

But that's as a still camera that just happens also to do video.

If you bought it specifically for video, that pre-supposes some knowledge of video. In which case, any casual search for specifications would have thrown up its limitations compared to the S95.

What it does have is cracking glass, and a good sensor for it's size. So I'm puzzled by your disappointment (especially since you don't actually specify what it is that the S90 lacks).

Maybe it's horses for course; if you want decent video capability, why not buy a video camera?

Cheers.

Edited for accuracy. My 5D2 and 7D both do 1080p. I think we can safely call the 24x36 mm sensor of the 5D2 "larger than average".

Of course, Jon - you're right.
I was referring to point and shoots.

There are also m4:3's, Nex's, etc, but that's another story.

The big problem with the s95 and s90 videos is that you cannot change the zoom when filming. Actual video quality seems pretty decent. I'd link to some family video clips I've taken, but your screen name is too creepy (even if referencing pixels) :)

Dude, I went from the s90 to the s95 and the video on the s95 is *way*, *way* better - relatively speaking. In my opinion, saying that the "S95 video is only a bit superior to S90" is like saying that a Chevy Suburban is only a little bit bigger than a Honda Civic.

Now the s95 still has some drawbacks compared to a video camera, or perhaps other cameras (there are things about it that annoy me, but I don't know if other cameras really do those things any better). It's annoying that you can't zoom in video. However, zooming in video always seems to require continuous autofocus, and I'd rather have the s95's "no autofocus after you start filming" than some other cameras I've used where 50% of the videos I took (not kidding) were ruined when the camera started continuously autofocussing in the middle of the video.

But relatively speaking - the s95's 720p video is much, much better for resolution than the s90's 480p video. Much better.
