While the film cameras were going, the 5D2 got pointed every which way. I was tired and just about at the end so I thought I'd turn the camera on myself. When the exposure started, neither the chair nor I was in the shot. I casually walked down, turned on my red headlamp to makes some notes in my little black book, turned it off and sat there for the rest of the exposure. I was down to 5 cameras from 7 the night before. I had two mechanical cable releases die, sadly. I will have to bring extras next time!

cool! thanks for the background on it :). just 5 cameras?? haha thats ridiculous to me. I just got one and its not even a 5D2 (30D -- it does the job for now)

If you're going to put the effort to sit there all night in the dark, having more cameras is very helpful to increasing your chances of getting good results. In these cases I am being scientific about the exposure and when exactly to open and shut the shutter to get just the right amount of moonlight.

Awesome shots Kurt! I tried, but can't pic a favorite!

I'm planning a mini-road trip up to Valley of Fire this month to get away from the light pollution here. I haven't done night shots in a year but damn you've motivated me to get back out there!
