No Power – No Lights – What to do?

Okay could be worse … it could have rained! Last week’s wedding had it’s fair share of challenges:

1. NO (none …nada … nicht) lighting during the ceremony. No problem. Done many weddings at locations that do not allow flash or other lights. And, there seemed to be plenty of light with super high ISO no matter how may colors are generated with stained glass.

2. But the reception was another issue. The entire San Diego Point Loma section was completely out of power. Main transformer blew up and would not be repaired for some time. Bride and Groom are very concerned as can be expected. Sitting in the Limo they asked what we could do to help? A call to action!! The DJ was able to “borrow” just enough energy from a small children’s carnival located across the street that was using a generator for the rides. Tied a dozen or so power extension cords together and was able to get just enough juice to power one speaker and get music and announcements. The photographers (that be me and team) went into our supply caddy and found two portable 12-volt video lights. Instead of having all three of us shoot, we put two people in charge of moving around the reception and light up “where the action was”. I brought out the big guns .. two Quantum T5D strobe units on stands with pocket wizards and Turbo 2x2 batteries. You would never know from the images that the reception was without power!

Happy Bride and Groom (under the circumstances) and job well done!

Few images from the gig: First 4 are in the church all natural lighting … Second 4 images are at the reception hall location (no power)….Enjoy….Dan

There are clrearly electric lights on in the church....but you were allowed to add no further light in there?

Quick thinking on 'obtaining' a little power at the reception tho :-)

Oh, and loving that last shot.

Wow! Way to overcome the terrible hand you were dealt. I hope I never have to deal with something like that. But if I do, I hope I handle it as well as you did. Thanks for sharing the story, and nice shots.

Yes the church had lights. Mainly used for night services. During the day windows did the job. In any case the available light was, as expected, .. not much. f/2.8 required ISO 1600 ... f/4.5 ISO 3200 and up. But as stated we did not see this as much of an issue. I would have liked to place four 1000 watt constant lights with focus capability up on the balcony. No big deal we couldn't do that....Dan

Nice shots but I think your being overly dramatic about the church, there's clearly big bright lights in the ceiling, massive windows and your first shot is only ISO 1000 f3.5 for 1/50 ..... that's loads of light, I wish most of the churches over here had that much light!

Nice shots though.

We have done so many wedding gigs that these kind of challenges are just part of the job. Never panic (at least never show panic).

That said I have read so many stories on bridal forums like "the Knot" about how photographers did not have the knowledge to handle these situations. Kind of separates pros from the weekend amateur. Unfortunately brides don’t know that their wedding day is ruined until it is too late….Dan

Like stated....it was OK. We wanted to augment with some constant light from the balcony and was told "no". Hand held shots pushed ISO 1600 to 3200. We did have two tripods and move them around the church for some lower ISO shots .....Dan
