Hello people, I have been offered a 300mm f/2.8 SSC converted to EOS for around
570 dollars, I have understood it is a very sharp lens, but is it worth it ? or should I rather
just let it and save my money for something else ?

FD lenses tend not to convert well to EOS mounts. Either they are glassless, which lose infinity focus, or they have glass to correct that but often take an IQ hit because of it. There are one or two conversions that work pretty well, but they are expensive. So much depends on how it is converted, it is hard to compare what you are looking at against somebody else's experience, which may be with a significantly worse/better conversion.

Although a lot of people on here use converted lenses, they are generally other mounts which don't have the problems that FD mounts do. I doubt that there are going to be many (if any at all) who have used that particular lens on an EOS body.

I still have 12 old FD mount lenses, from my film days with the old Canon system, but have have replaced them with proper EF mount lenses, rather than convert them. The old lenses just sit in a case, should I ever decide to use my old film gear again.

Simple enough to go over there then, take some shots with it on your camera and check out the results. Remember to try focusing on something at infinity, to make sure it can still do infinity focusing.

If you're happy with the results, you're good to go.

I have converted some of the new FD super tele lenses to EF mount.
It is a bigger amount of work, because there you need some special solution to make the iris usable.
Check if infinity works, test if the iris moves. Look into the lens and close / open the ris. Is the iris exactly round at 2.8? Sometimes the iris is not full open as it should.
How fits the EF mount to your camera - soometimes it goes hard. Could be a problem.
How does the mount looks like? Looks it like it is parallel? Are there slits where light could enter?
Are there bright areas in the lens?

Visit my homepage to get an impression how FD-Ef lens conversions could look like.
