Anyone have any experience taking a shot of a cigarette lit up? I tried this before but the smoke is hard to control and diffuses the light which makes the image blurry. To Photoshop the smoke effect or not to Photoshop, that is the question. Cheers!

I took this with an unlit cig against black background in studio. a few days later I took a cig and played around with it outside at night using the same camera lens combo with a remote shutter release. The flash this time was not studio strobe but 580EXII. I added the smoke and burnt tip as a new selection and blended to taste. this is obviously a different shot of the smoke, I took about 20 due to a very slight amount of wind in the backyard.

The answer is that it's easy to photoshop it in, and if you want it easy that's the way to go. I'm a purist at heart, so I would far prefer to shoot with the smoke in the shot.

I think the way to do it would be to create a draw - not so much so that the smoke flies everywhere, but enough that there is a definite trail leading where you want the smoke to go.

You'll also need a spotlight on the smoke alone, of course...

Unless the smoke itself is actually the "subject," the problem with doing it during the actual session is that you spend too much time getting the smoke right instead of worrying about the more significant aspects of the session.

And of course, most models are not going to want to be actually smoking, nor do you really want a smokey studio or smoke around other people...and in some states in the US it would actually be illegal to have a lighted cigarette during a commercial session.

I agree with your other points, but this sounds so absurd to me; do you have a source?

Do factories have to be smoke-free?
Yes. All indoor workplaces will be smoke free.

Which Q/A applies? I don't see one that fits a photo shoot in a private business...

Huh - to me that sounds like more of an OSHA thing...

Nope. It's not required by OSHA. It's a state thing.

The law covers all workplaces in the state and any business open to the public.

All indoor workplaces will be smoke free.

Smoking is allowed in private residences except when used as a child care, adult day care, or healthcare facility, or any other home-based business open to the public.

This isn't politics, it's business operations law, just like model releases.
