and took it for a good run today with about 200 shots. IT was weeks of back and forth between the Canon S95 and the Panasonic Lumix LX5....the LX5 has better noise handling especially at 400-800 iso but at the end of the day the size of the S95 won me over.

I'm shooting manual a lot and I figured most things out without reading the booklet but one thing is a bit of a peeve...is there a way I can view photo's without having the lens extend? I figure I have to turn on the camera every time to review photos...but the lens pops out and I figure there must be away to view pictures without enabling the lens.

Yeah, there is. With the camera off, hold down the little button on the back with the blue arrow for about 2 seconds. This will turn on Playback mode so you can see your photos. This is all explained in the manual, btw.

Actually, another cool thing is you do:

Menu->Right->Lens Retract 0 sec, when you go into review mode it will immediately retract the lens. I think this is great for handing off the camera to other people to take a look at the photo right after you take it - at least for me it is. :-)

You're the first person I've heard say that the lx5 does *better* noise handling at higher iso's.

really? I thought 400-800 ISO shots were slightly better with the LX5 based on my test shots, I don't have them anymore.

Compare them on www.dpreview.com (external link) . You can put photos of the same ISO from different cameras of the same test pattern. It's an excellent way to see which camera is best for what you want.

I shoot raw and clean up noise myself. The different manufacturers use different levels of reduction in their jpegs

That's a good one. Thanks.

Don't get me wrong, i'm liking this camera. It's very cool tonality wise and fairs well against the Ricoh III. (which is not available in Canada) I shoot a lot of street photography. Focus has been interesting but I'm getting the hang of it.
