I'm starting to expand my studio equipment, Till now I allways used a white wall (and
the grey floor) but I don't like that at all... So I figured I should buy a proper background,
White is a logic one, but what else ? grey ? sand ? beige ? Black ? what will be of the most
use and why ?

Grey is always a good option. You can make it white by putting a lot of light on it and its easier to make black without light on it.

get two different rolls of savage seemless paper - white & grey.

depending on how you place your lights, and your studio space, you can make white dark grey (or even black). Grey you an lighten, and make brighter, or straight black.

White & Grey are the most popular for these reasons.

Black, white and gray. Great for fashion images where the clothing is the object of the image and the clothing gets the brunt of the attention, but for portraiture where the subject is the object of the image these are boring, colorless and boring, and really boring. Boring backgrounds assist in making boring images. Yes some people look good on black, some look good on white, and some look good on gray. Nearly everyone looks good on blues, greens and browns, especially if they are not seamless all one color but instead are mottled, or swirled with a variety of several colors like one gets with a muslin or painted canvas background.

Of course this is only my opinion and I'm not a real pro like some here.

Now a days so many options are available. Look at Denny Mfg. catalog for example. Of course nice backgrounds cost money.

Shipping those long tubes is expensive.
Your local camera shops are the best place to buy seamless. They order large quantities and get a much better deal on the freight.

@ Curtis

Your links are amazing, but how do you prevent light from the "subject lights" spilling onto the background ?

Not if you live in NJ. $12 bucks to ship. :)
