APS-C Camera + Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 = Full frame camera + X

Solve for X.

Right now, I shoot APS-C + the Tokina. I'm really wanting to switch to a full frame. However, that means finding a new wide angle lens, ideally within the 16-30mm range. The reviews I'm reading for Canon's wide zooms, the 17-40 and even the 16-35, seem inferior to the reviews I've read about the Tokina lens. If possible, I would like it to be under 77mm lens thread so I can use my ND filters.

Current full frame wide angle lens shooters, what would you recommend? The Tokina 16-28mm looks good despite poor quality control, but that won't take filters at all. Reason why filters are important is because I shoot a lot of film with these DSLR cameras, and I need to hit a 1/50 shutter speed for smooth 24p footage with my glidecam in the sun.

The Canon 17-40mm seems to fit the bill perfectly, but I've heard it has really heavy distortion near the wide end and has some significant sharpness issues in the corners compared to the Tokina at equal FOV's. I haven't used it, but that's just what I've been reading.

X = Nikon 12-24? :lol:

Though I am half serious on this.

I wish man. I wish. The best wide angle lens, ever.

But then I would need to buy an adapter... and then I couldn't mount ND filters...

Speaking of which, how the hell do you use filters with lenses with the fisheye bulge (even though it's not a fisheye lens). Is it str8 impossible?

Yeah it is possible.. but you need to buy an adapter.

Some people buy step-up rings first. And then buy those big-ol' square-shaped filters (the brand/name escapes me at the moment). They're fancy.. and very expensive. But that's how you'd do it.

(Cokin, Lee, etc...)

Step up rings to the big square filters.

Balls.

I can't do that right now, because I know how expensive they are. And I'm not using step-down rings, for obvious reasons.

Am I fish of luck in regard to this situation? Is the Tokina + 11-16mm + APS-C camera really the best combo for wide angle shooting with 77mm filters? It seems odd to me that there isn't a sufficient full frame alternative.

Yep. Think you're SoL. I think the problem is because of the size of the image circle to cast over the 35mm sensor. You'd have to significantly increase the physical size of the overall lens (not just the glass) in order to achieve the same image circle. I assume it's cheaper and more easily done by just going with the bulbous convex front element design.

Really no 18mm that is sharp @ F/4.5 (for the same DoF etc) with similar contrast/colours/distortion etc? I've hardly used FF stuff at all, but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find that.

Alright, well.

What is your opinion of the Canon 17-40mm f4 within the 17-24 range?

I guess since the 5D Mark II has an iso 50 feature... shooting with ND filters won't be as much of a necessity to reach 1/50 at preferably f8 or lower out in the sun. I could just snag the Tokina 16-28 and screw the filters. Not ideal, though.

Yea. It's just as good as the Tokina 11-16 at equivalent lengths. Stop worrying about it.

Can you deal with the 16mm focal view on the aps-c end?

I just recently switched from a 60d to a 5d mk 2, and do steadycam work as well. I am thinking my nikkor 24mm F2.8 is going to work great. You can find them for $100-$200 on ebay, have great build quality(good focus ring for pulling focus when not on steadicam), and a small filter size. I use 77mm vari-nd's with stepup rings as well. The lens is super sharp.

Nice shot. I'm curious in how it performs in the corners at f5.6. When you get a chance, mind shooting at that aperture at 17-20mm range without cropping the corners? And then maybe post a 100% crop of the something that's in focus near the edges?
