I just got the ELPH 100HS yesterday and went to a local amusement park where it got a good workout. I thought i would share my initial impressions.

This camera was to replace an SD1400 that was dropped and I just recently sold an S90. Compared to the SD1400, the 100HS absolutely kills it all around. Pictures look sharper and with better color and contrast. I always had to tweak the SD1400 images to get them to look decent and I never felt like they were crisp. Usability, I like the direct video button, but the 100HS is missing a couple buttons that now require menus - including the delete button.

Compared to the S90, I am surprised that I am not disappointed in image quality. At low ISO, the S90 was a little sharper, especially if I shoot RAW, and it held up better to pixel peeping. I also felt they had a little more depth due to the larger sensor. However, at higher ISO (640+) the 100HS seems to actually be a tiny bit better. The S90 is a stop faster on the lens, so it probably would win a real world low light test. Usability is no contest as the S90 has lots of dials and buttons, but the 100HS is much more portable.

Video quality on the 100HS is superb. 1080p@24fps or 720p@30fps. The video looks crisp and smooth even in low light.

All in all, this seems like the perfect pocket camera and the price is amazing for what you get. I feel like I am getting near S90 picture quality with the portability of the Sd1400. The only real downside I have seen is that if you blow highlights, they tend to "bloom" a little bit, so you really notice it.

Samples (from an amusement park yesterday)

Miniature mode was fun from high on the huge Ferris wheel:

Nice shots especially at high ISO....

When you say video quality is superb are you saying it looks good on the camera LCD or on your computer once you download? I think some people overlook the fact your computer is the limiting factor in playing back and editing good quality HD video.

I meant on the computer the videos look good. You do need the right codec and a half decent video card to watch 1920x1080, though. I think I might drop it down to 720p/30fps because action looks a little smoother and my monitor is only 1680x1050 and my TV 720p, so I can't even watch "full HD"

So good to hear that you like it so much, especially as you are a previous S90 owner.
I would imagine its dynamic range is lower than that of the S90. It seemed to handle
those highlights very well in the second shot of the Pagoda. Enjoy it! (is it blue?)

I am liking my 100HS as well. My only issue with it is a slight tendency to over-expose, but it's really easy to correct. Setting the compensation to -1/3EV and turning on iContrast results in very good photos for a P&S.

curious as to the first icture, most p&s are in focus over a large dof, that seems to be only those areas where the distance is that of the blue pylon in the left center of the frame

how did you do that one ? tia
