apply layer mask problem

OK, the senility may be kicking in tonight, but I thought I had applied a layer mask to an adjustment layer in the past. When I right-click on the adjustment layer mask, it doesn't give me the option to apply mask. It is also greyed out when I go to Layer/Layer Mask and in the Mask panel. It works fine on a mask on a regular layer.

Can you apply the mask to an adjustment layer?

CS5, 32bit, v12.0.4.

I'm not sure if you can. It seems to be grayed out.

Are you trying to combine the adjustment layer and the previous layers? If so, you can use either merge down, merge visible or flatten, depending on the situation.

If you want to merge 2 adjacent layers together use merge down (on the top layer). If you want to merge certain layers together, you hide the layers you don't want to merge and then use merge visible. If you want to just merge everything together (and/or discard hidden layers), use flatten.

No, only to "physical" (pixel) layers.

Adjustment layers and their masks are one entity, really. Even though they appear in the palette as if they are separate (even to the extent of having a little chain icon indicating the link, which does absolutely nothing as far as I can tell), they have very little similarity to the relationship between a pixel layer and its mask.
