Hi all. On my new 350d ( used ) I take out the Compact flash and view it on the computer and insted of the files being in one folder they are in as many as 6 different folders..i.e
257 canon 258 canon 259 canon 260 canon 261 canon......it's alot more convenient if they are all in one folder......any suggestions!

Thank you very much

Is there a way of killing the beast?

A folder will only hold 100 images. No you can't change it as it's a camera firmware limit.

It's how all bar the 1D series cameras work, unfortunately it has been since Canon started making DSLR's. I believe it was something to do with a limitation on how many files could be in one folder in the original file format used, or something like that anyway, they only allow 100 images in each folder.

With my Canon 550d ( SD card ) I take loads of pictures ( much more than 100 ) and they open in 1 folder............I take less pictures with my 350d ( Compact flash ) and they open in 5 or 6 folders. Why the inconsistency?

Maybe you're waiting several days between downloading.. I think that it makes a new sub- folder each shooting day.

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

My mistake, the folder thing seems to be part of the firmware in the older cameras, I have the 300D and it is in the manual for that camera on P58 under file numbering. I checked the 550D manual, which I had a good look at when I was considering a 550D purchase, and had missed the fact that it allowed 0001 to 9999 to all be in one folder.

Thanks that's probably it.......newer models allow one to open all their pictures in one folder and the older cameras don't. And in response to the earlier post I took all the pictures on the same day. Thanks all!

Yeah, that's it. My 20D used to use multiple folders on a shoot, my newer bodies (5D and 40D) only open a new folder at 9999 images, so usually in one folder but occasionally 2 if it catches the rollover.

Here's a trick which might help. Using a card reader, upload your entire DCIM folder from your 350D to your desktop. Once you've done this, delete all the folders on the card..

The next time you shoot, a new folder will be generated from the folder number you left off and you'll only have one folder on the card until you go over 100 exposures when another folder will be generated.
