Hi guys, i though it best to post in here to ask this question.

Im using photoshop cs3 and id like to create the outline of an image.

For instance if i had a picture say of a camera or a car, how can i make it so i only have the outline of the image?

I hope that is clear enough. I am very new to this and and im just trying to find out a few tips.

Thanks.

Derek.

I don't know exactly what you're looking for but you can try under "Filter > Stylize >" and then choose one of those Edge filters applied to a layer copy. And then you can change the layer blending mode to desired effect. If you want you can even invert it.

If I were to try and show the outline of an object, say a car. If you want all of the interior lines and edges showing one of the stylize filter as mentinoed above would work fine. If all you want is the outside line and nothing inside I would do a selection of the object and then you can do alot with that. You can stroke it using the edit-stroke command, you can fill it with one color or a gradient to add a shadow to the object. I personally would convert the the selection to a path so that I could then stroke it using a brush of my choice. It all depends on how good you are at making selections and it is worth noting that the selection tools have come a long way since CS3. You are a little thin on what your absolute objective is which will drive the answers to a certain degree. No matter which way you do it, I would try and select the object in question and copy it to a new layer.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

If you want something like this.
Create Layer Copy (Background Copy)
Select By Color Range (in this pic I selected the background)
Invert Selection.
Make the Selection into a Work Path (right click the selection > Make Work Path)
Set the tolerance to 1 or 2 pixels, In this I chose 1 px.
Make a new blank layer and fill it with white.
You should see the outline.

You can leave the blank layer transparent if all you want is the lines. Then you can turn of visibility of the underlying layers.
Or you can choose whatever color you like for the background color. If you choose another color, especially a darker color, you will want to make the path active then use Stroke Path and select the width and color of your choice for your outline.
