Not quite a full Frontal but as close as most on here, 10 points to anyone who knows what it is?

Initial thought was Tiger Moth but a few things say no. Definitely a de Havilland though.

OK no correct guesses :D

ARROW ACTIVE 2 - G-ABVE (1932) An aircraft built by Arrow Aircraft of Leeds. Despite being utilised as an aerobatic sports aircraft Arrows original intention was to sell it to the military. Alex Henshaw of "Mew Gull" fame owned first prototype Arrow Active 1 and had a lucky escape by parachute when the aircraft caught fire and was subsequently destroyed in the resulting crash. The Arrow Active 2 was built with a slightly more powerful Gipsy III engine and has happily survived despite being damaged and rebuilt a number of times since.

Not too sure about that, the engine was fitted in many aircraft and not sure if the Gypsy Moth name had anything to do with the name of the power plant. After all the Tiger Moth wasn't powered by a Tiger nor was the Puss Moth powered by a Cat:D Going by the list below it doesn't look as if the Gypsy Moth ever had the Gypsy Major engine in it, although as you say the de Havilland connection is there.

EDIT: You suggested Tiger Moth in the first place not Gypsy Moth, sorry, you were right, the engine connection was correct, I should read closer.

Surely if the engine is running inverted it should be classed as an under head valve engine :D

Your pic is of an Active 2 which has the Gipsy III motor which was used in the early variants of the Tiger Moth I. Gipsy Major was later used in the Tiger Moth bipes.

In any case, what set it off as a DH for me was the spinner and inverted engine. The Arrow's shorter wingspan, more robust landing gear and dihedral were what made it not a Tiger Moth for me.

Good fun with an pretty rare aircraft! Thanks for posting.

Might be a good thread to start! "Name this plane!"

I think my confusion came from the page on the infonet that referred to the engine as a Gypsy Major III when in fact the Gypsy Major is a slightly modified Gypsy III, although I suppose but don't have time to research it; as time went on and the Major engine was developed further; there could have eventually been a Major III.

Taken from another Website 'The de Havilland Gipsy Major (a.k.a. Gipsy III) was the first version of the Gipsy inline 4 cylinder air-cooled aero-engine designed to be run inverted'

Too much misinformation on the Web!

Notice the American form of "Gipsy" they were made in America as well under licence, probably had even more veriants there as well?
