Can there be a forum for non-Canon gear in the Equipment Talk section? I'm a Nikon shooter and I know there's plenty of us here as well as a handful of Sigma, Sony, or Pentax owners, and there's currently no proper place on POTN to make threads about our gear.

Yes this is a mostly Canon forum, but since you guys aren't affiliated with Canon Inc., it would be nice to be a bit more accommodating for other photographers. You might even get more members joining.

POTN is great and there's really no equivalent for other manufacturers.

Patience grasshopper, all things happen in the fullness of time.

You are correct it is: "Canon Digital Photography Forums" . The boss is coding new forum software. When it is ready, and only when it is ready, new things will be happening, and your wish may be granted. There will be no changes until then.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.

Well, of course you are free to start a thread in say the camera section -- there are active Nikon and Leica threads going there now. So if you have a body to talk about, that seems to be an OK place to do it even if it is non-Canon and the section is designated "EOS" or another Canon designation.

The same goes for lenses -- all manner of lenses are discussed in a lot of threads in the Lens discussion section and the Lens Archives section.

So, it's not like you aren't free to post in a topic-appropriate section. But, yeah, the overall purpose of the forum has been for Canon users, just like there are forums for Nikon, Pentax, etc, and then there are forums that are specifically about general photography with no ID relating to a certain make, so what do ya do? I like this place for what it is, but then I'm quite happy with my Canon DSLRs and having a place where they and I can call "home":)!

Another consideration: if their were non-Canon sections for bodies and gear, well, fine, people with that gear could post there, the threads about Nikon and Leica bodies and non-Canon lenses could all be moved there, us Canon shooters could easily just ignore those sections and stick with our Canon sections...well, as nifty as that might sound, it also means that we would lose the exposure we have had over the years -- we Canon shooters can gain with having some exposure to these other lines, and vice versa, and since discussion here is pretty open as far as, say, Nikon shooters being able to talk about there bodies and features (as long as they don't get obnoxious about it) well, we Canon shooters end up with some nice info. And the same goes in the other direction -- there are Nikon shooters who hang out here because of the quality of the help and info that comes out here. I'd personally not like to see the "other makes" "segregated"!

Correction to Tony's post - threads about non-Canon gear may be started/continued in the General Photography forum, not in the "gear" forums, since those are specifically identified as "Canon".

Is there still a chance of the new coding including formatting for mobile devices (i.e. iPhone, iPad, crappy ubiquitous android hardware, etc.) with some auto-browser-detection??

I routinely test everything with iPad (feels/looks great!) and some major phones, Android and Nokia. Bottom line is that modern mobile devices will be supported. There are couple of things of course which can not be done with ipad/phone like drag/drop (used in some additional features, not really required) and file uploads (Apple prevents html uploads).

Ah, thanks for that correction -- I need to pay more attention! So the lens archive section is not Canon-specific -- I gather that's because it is specific to lenses that have a Canon mount or are used with a Canon adapter?

Right - it's for lenses that can be used on Canon DSLRs. That holds for the lens forum in general. But if you choose to use a different company's camera, discussion falls in General Photography Talk, preferably in an existing brand-specific thread if one exists.
