Just wondering what peoples' thoughts are on selling via Amazon Marketplace? I just set up an account and sold a lens for more (net $ to me) than I was advertising it for here (with zero interest) and for more than eBay seemingly would have netted me.

Seems pretty simple, though my funds have not cleared yet.

That sounds ominous...care to share more details? I'm thinking Amazon has me covered. That's how they earn their cut; no?

They primarily have themselves covered which means if they don't get paid then neither do you. It's really no different then selling on Ebay and getting paid via Paypal. Although you can withdraw from Paypal faster then you can get paid by Amazon (14 days minimum hold) if things did go south. It's all clearly noted in the faq's seller has A-Z coverage and you are SOL even if the customer scams you.

Please note: As a seller on Amazon, you are responsible for managing the returns process for materially different, defective, or damaged items, including providing buyers with a way to make the return and processing the refund for the return. Failure to manage the return may result in a debit to your Marketplace Payments account if Amazon refunds the buyer pursuant to an A-to-z Guarantee claim, even if the item is not returned to you. You may also be held responsible if no response is received from you on an A-to-z Guarantee claim, or for declining to handle a return request that falls within required return policies.

I've sold a bunch of smaller value stuff ($25-$100) there over the past few years. Never had an issue with a fraudulent payment or with any customers.

I'd be curious as to what you sold and how much you netted.

Canon 40D and more lenses than my wife knows about...

I sold a Canon 60mm/2.8 macro lens. Sold for $404; netted $377. Shipping on me. Had the lens listed here at $365 with no interest. Would've still had shipping + PayPal fees.

So I'm roughly $22 ahead (if I had gotten my $365 price here). Not a huge benefit, but it's pretty easy to use and doesn't require any maintenance in terms of PMs and low balls, questions, etc. I guess the big question revolves around security. Am I better with a one-on-one transaction here or using Amazon as the portal?

I put a new 60D up on Amazon Marketplace. Got about 20 "hits", 19 of which were clearly scammers, 1 of which may or may not have been a scammer but by the time I got that one I was so sick of seeing junk emails from "buyers" that I just ignored it (that, and I had already sold the camera on Ebay)

I have to admit though, one of the scammers did an EXCELLENT job. Since it was the first one I got I didnt realize what was up.....said to contact them at a different email address (which I did, but also made sure to copy the Amazon marketplace address too). Then I got 3 emails: 1 from "Amazon Marketplace" saying it was sold, 1 from "PayPal" saying the money was in my account, and 1 more from "Amazon Marketplace" saying the item has been paid for and "now ship". If you saw these emails and werent really paying attention, you would have sent the item out....thats how realistic they were. Too bad for the scammer, an address in Nigeria always raises some questions. Logged into PayPal and hey look the money wasnt really there. And the item was still available on Amazon Marketplace.

So, everyone be careful out there, the seas are rough!

I've sold probably over 50-100 items on Amazon Marketplace over 5+ years. I have yet to receive a scam email from there. As long as you do all correspondence only through Amazon, and check the status of everything through the Amazon website (your Inventory, your Notifications, verify the seller shipping address, etc.), I think your chances of being scammed is fairly low.

My Feedback

I put my 60mm lens up on Amazon and it sold very fast. I had it listed here with a free copy of Nik Silver EFex for $30 less than it sold for on Amazon without the NIK software.
