When importing, I usually rename my files as follows:
[SUBject name].(YYYYMMDD).(Original File Number).DNG
For example,
Evans_Baby_Shower.20110502.7541.DNG

Currently, as part of the Import dialog, I have to go into the File Renaming pane, then Custom, then Edit, then change the name to include the day's subject. It's a mild hassle. It would be much better if Lightroom could prompt for the [SUBject name] during the Import dialog.

Can I use the "Shoot Name" or "Custom" fields? So far, these just resolve to "untitled" which is, of course, not what I want. Do those fields come from metadata created by the camera?

I have a number of import presets already, with the file names set up for my most common subjects. But my presets only cover about 1/3 of the shots I take.

Thanks.

Use the custom text token, like the other tokens (YYYYMMDD) & (Original File Number).

It's at the bottom of the dialog box when you are building your template under Custom, just press the insert button next to it, it will put in a token like (custom text) and then you save your template.

When you use the template during import, or renaming your files, you will be prompted for the custom text

EDIT: See this blog post, scroll down to "File Renaming Section" ... Clicky (external link)

Hope this helps

Thanks, that's it.

I missed that there's an extra little box under "File Renaming" where you type in the custom text or shoot name. If you don't type something in there (as I haven't in the past), it defaults to "untitled" or something like that.
