Hello group:

I've just bought my first lens for my "new" 10D; the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM. So far, it's been a great setup, and I'm looking to add something a bit wider, but still a zoom. My price range really is limited to $300-400, and unfortunately there's not a local retailer I can shop at and compare lenses with. So, I've come up with a online few choices, and I'd like some sage advice from those that have used any of the following:

Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 (this is by far the least expensive)

Sigma 20-40mm f/2.8 EX

Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX

I always shoot landscapes and the like outside, so I'm guessing a faster lens than any of the above wouldn't be needed. Any other lenses I should also consider, perhaps from Canon? I also thought about just starting with Canon's 18-55mm "kit" lens from a 20D or XT, which I've heard can be easily modded to fit my 10D. They're available for next to nothing, and even if they're quality-limited, I'd at least be able to get a feel for something in that focal-length range. Good idea/bad idea?

TIA for any thoughtful advice you may offer.

18mm isn't really that wide, I have a Tokina 12-24 which cost about $500 which I really like. apart from that just read the reviews on fredmiranda.com and photographyreview.com to find what you like. The Sigma 10-20 is also around the same price, but doesn't have a constant aperture like the Tokina lens.

The Tokina 12-24 is a very nice wide angle lens for 1.6x crop cameras.

It depends on how wide you want to go. I just ordered a Tamron 17-35mm 2.8-4.0 from buydig.com. It cost $429 (which is $70 less than B&H or Adorama) plus it has a $40 mail-in rebate bringing it down to $389. From the reviews I've read it is the poor man's version of the Canon 17-40 L. It's supposed to be one of those great buys, line the Tamron 28-75mm XRDi. This price should fit your budget. Mine comes in this week and I'm looking forward to testing it out.

I've been using my 15-30 Sigma for a couple of years now, on my D60 and my 20D. It's a nice lens, plus it'll cover full-frame should you succumb to that particular form of lust (for really wide angle shots). The only wider zoom lens that can make that particular claim is also a Sigma, their 12-24. None of the other wider zooms will cover more than an APS-C sensor.

HI,
I recently bought a sigma 20-40mm from cameta on ebay for 319 + shipping and I am pretty happy with it so far. focusing is fast. It seems a little soft at 40mm but not too bad 2.8 is still very useable at the wide end it is sharp at 2.8 . I needed a lens that would work on my 1d and xt both It fit the bill and the price was right. You can see some samples at

p.s.
Cameta lowered the price since I bought it to 299

You are missing the Tokina 12-24 from your list. This, in my opinion, is the best lens for the money.

Canon 20d, Tokina 28-70 2.8, Canon 70-200 4L, Canon 100 Macro, tokina 12-24 4
