All,

My wife's grandmother (age 95ish) gave me a small photograph on our last trip to Germany. It is barely 2"x2". It is of her and her dog, taken about 60 years ago. She had asked my wife to teach her say, in English, "Can you fix?"

Well how could I turn her down? I am pretty adept at PS, and normally this would not be a the problem it is. I did not see that the crack ran right through her nose - and without any other sources to clone from, I am left with "freehanding" a nose. Well, if I could freehand, I would be a painter, not a photographer! All of my attempts look like a "flat spot" on her nose - imagine Marcia Brady after getting hit with the football! I am not getting the contour and shading in any way that looks realistic.

Point being, creating a nose from what I have here is beyond my ability, so I am asking for help.

This is a 100% crop of the scan in question. If you are up to it, please take a stab and post back what you able to do.

This represents about 10% of the picture area, and I am well in progress with addressing all the other "fix-it" issues. Further, I am not worried about the smile, or the eye or the blur. It's just that nose that has me flummoxed!

I thank in advance anyone who is able to help.

Rad

Take a picture of your wife's nose and blend it in.

HA HA - been so long since I actually ROLFed I forgot how. Thank god I had the instructions!

So won't work. Her father's genes (this is mother's mother) in that respect are so strong that it just ain't gonna work.

With a little time can even remove all the creased wrinkles and tears.

Should have clarified in my original post - CS3.

However, if anyone has CS5, and wants to try that route, please, please, by all means do.

I'm impressed! Thanks, anyone else?

Oh, and all the other stuff, I am pretty good at in CS3 - that won't be a problem.

Great - looks like both Content Aware Fills wanted to tweak her nose a bit to viewer's right. I can easily take care of that with a little liquefy!

Thanks.

There are all kinds of great Photo Restoration Tutorials online dating back to CS3 and beyond. You don't need CS5 and Content Aware Fill to get good results.
The Key Tool for this kind of thing is the Clone Stamp Tool, and Dodge and burn to get your various tones.

Yeah, content aware fill should be used sparingly. Content aware fill for relatively larger blemish (the big tear in the middle) then spot heal the edges of the newly filed in area and the tears radiating out.

Agreed. CS5 just makes work like this easy :)

Transform tool/Warp or Liquify. Steal a nose from a pic of your wife's mother. Anyway, glad I made you laugh. ;)
