I now have windows 7 home premium 64 bit version. Many older programs my wife uses for school will not install ( I have tried the troubleshoot run as option without any success). I see you can upgrade to windows 7 professional and download xp and virtual pc and run xp in virtual mode behind windows 7 but this seems like it may cause more problems than one can imagine? Anyone try this?

By the way these programs I am referring to do not have any upgrades from the software companies that made them, so that option is not available.

I am looking around for comparable new programs that are compatible with windows 7 but haven't had much luck yet. My wife will freak when she finds out and I know what's coming next - I told you we didn't need a new computer!

I have some accounting software that won't run in 7, but when I want to open it I get a prompt to pick the windows environment for the program. My desktop is still packed right now and I can't remember what version of 7 I have (moving in here) however, you could always try this:

VMWare player is what I use and I love it. Then you can "Enter Unity" and it runs in the background but you can do everything in Win7 desktop. So you can open Win7 IE and then open up IE from XP. The one with XP will have a red box around it. With WMWare. I had Ubuntu, Mandrake and Mint just for the hell of it and it was great but I rarely used them so I got rid of them to save some space.

My current system, started with Windows 7, home premium 64 bit

I had several older programs, mostly engineering and marine navigation stuff, that would not install. I upgraded to Windows 7 professional 64 bit, and then downloaded 'virtual pc' and Windows XP mode. Next I opened the virtual pc, and it runs XP just like my old system. My programs installed, and they run great.

Make sure you have 8GB or more memory if you run a VM. Though it probably will run fine with less, over time it makes a world of difference.

virtual pc will run fine with your system no worries.

before going there ,however, i would research for easier alternatives.

To be specific, if it doesnt install its not the program that does not run on win7 64bit but the installer!

And there are force-options to make (usually .MSI package) to unpack.

so basically, let us know if its the installer or the prog it self and the error message you receive.

Then you're not doing enough. I throttle my 12GB system at work to the point of swap daily, and I've hit around 20GB used on my 24GB system at home.

OP: 7 Pro/Ultimate with XP Mode is a good option since it includes the license to run XP. It should only cost you $60 to go form Home Premium to Pro.

Alternatively, if you have a copy of XP sitting around and don't mind doing the install yourself, try out VirtualBox. You won't have the unified desktop like you get in XP Mode, but it won't cost you anything.

Also, if you go with the upgrade to Pro and XP Mode, do yourself a favor and increase the memory allocation to the VM from 512MB to 1GB. The performance increase is significant and 100% worth it if you're using the VM frequently.

I read somewhere that if you run another operating system in virtual mode you should have an anti virus installed on that os also. I think I will keep researching and trying to find other programs that my wife will like that can work with windows 7 64 before I create some monster and more problems than I can solve by messing around with xp and virtual mode or other dual systems.

I've always found VMWare and VirtualPC to be very hardware intensive applications. Though VMWare has its advantages in a corporate environment.

For home / personal use, I would suggest / recommend using Oracle VirtualBox, its free and will do everything you need for XP virtualisation. I can almost guarentee you won't even notice it running. VMWare Player at least wont allow you to save snapshots, where as Virtualbox will, what this means is if the Virtual Machine fails (due to software change, virus etc) you can revert to a snapshot you created and have it back up and running quickly (obviously this will only restore the data that was saved in that snapshot also).

Finally, if you already have an XP machine that you want to copy to virtual, you should be able to follow this process. I have used the VMWare converter tool in the past and has worked 99% of the time. http://www.sysprobs.com …virtualbox-virtualbox-p2v (external link)

I have no issue running XP in VirtualBox with 512mb RAM and a single virtual processor assigned to it. If your applications are fairly intensive bump it up to 1gb of RAM.

Also I generally set my Virtual Machines network adapter to bridged mode rather than NAT as it provides the most flexibility and troubleshooting capabilities.

You guys are light years ahead of my computer skills. The programs that wont install are Disney's Mickey and Friends Print Studio for Windows 95 or 3.1 or later and GradeQuick copyright 2003 by Jackson version 8 for Windows 95,2000, NT- no online updates available for either. I was able to get the GradeQuick to open and run from the cd but if you know of an programs like the mickey print studio that will install on windows 7 64, please list them. Thanks
