I'm so upset.....

Went on a 4-day trip in the outback and came back to find my website had been hacked.
Regardless, I've wiped out the whole directory of files.
I can't access even my main domain without some eff'n error....

I'm about to just cry and give up! But instead.....

Any other sites you can recommend to show off your gallery with?
I've done....
Wordpress blog
DeviantArt (which I still use, but it's just a useless dumping ground)
Flickr/photobucket/redbubble... meh! not impressed

anything else worthy?

Try 500px.com, they allow you a gallery and a blog / wall, great community behind it.

Have you tried SmugMug or other sites like them?

If you're into the social networking type thing, Google + is becoming the hot topic lately.

500px.com, wordpress.org are the ones i like
i use tumblr for my blog and wordpress for my website.

like said above 500px = cool comunity of photogs, gallery, portfolio website that can use a different domain name, a blog section and much more.
the only problem i have with 500px as a blog is how are they supposed to find it without an account / you giving them a link .
wondering how they hacked you?
did you have a simple password? because wordpress tells your username to the public so all they need to do is guess your password.
and did they hack your wordpress or your hosting service? (like godaddy)

also you can get hacked on any website, so use a long strong password, even a sentence like
IHad1KidWhenIWas20ButIDroppedHimOnHisHead!
that would be a pretty hard password to hack haha.
random, upper and lower case and symbols are your best bet.
sorry that happend to ya

do you have spyware and virus protection on your computer / any computer you log into?
when i had problems it was because i had a stupid trojan, from downloading bunch o music for free. (illegally) served me right :/
first thing i would do is make your computer safe, then personal stuff like that only log into on known safe computers/ networks

I use a Mac.... ... anyway I do use a mac version virus protection. Clamx or something like that...

But I know that wordpress sites seem to get hacked quite frequently and quite often. I need to tighten up the security on the .htaccess file or something like that which I'm totally clueless on how to do.

I use Wordpress too on a couple of sites. Like some of you, I would like to know more about securing it. One particular site, I'd installed a plugin called WP-activity, at the time it wasn't installed specifically with security in mind but rather to check when certain users were logging in, what they were adding, deleting etc. (for moderation). After a couple of months, I began to notice many failed logins with the "admin" username. There were a few others with strings or funny symbols and after googling them, the first result that appears is some kiddie's "How to hack a website" Youtube video.

Great...alarm bells ringing!

I googled about securing my website and there were many suggestions for plugins but most of them are outdated and no longer work with the newest version of Wordpress. I'd rather update my WP installation than wait for plugins to be updated!

Maybe someone here has advice? :)

I reckon the best advice on securing WP blogs would be the WP forums themselves. Although I wrote on their forum only to have my head spin telling me how to secure my site.
