"Nikon has announced an inexpensive macro lens aimed at entry-level DSLR users. The AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G offers true 1:1 macro in a compact, lightweight package..... MSRP $279.95."

I don't know if a 40mm macro makes a ton of sense for most of us, but I applaud Nikon for continuing to release affordable primes with good build and modern AF motors. It's a shame Canon doesn't want to do the same.

+1

Actually its equal to a FF 60mm, So its really not unheard of, also its $280! So at that price it makes an excellent introductory to the world of macro photography while also being a decently fast portrait lens

What the hell Canon, Nikon has released 2 affordable lenses so far this year, Both primes, Both really cool lenses, You've given us a rehashed 55-250...3 letters for you, WTF?

I might be considering my loyalties after the end of the year if Canon continues the trend of niche and rediculously expensive lenses they've been on lately...

Could say the same about the identically priced 50mm compact macro. Which has been available for years...

Which doesnt go to 1:1 without an adapter... nor does it have USM

Also it doesnt come with a hood or a case, the Nikkor does...

Exactly. My first macro lens was the 50/2.5, but that motor is slow and LOUD...and it only does 1:2.

Definitely loud, but I found it fairly fast focusing, especially for a non-USM and macro lens.

Well, it was on par for a non-USM macro lens AF motor, but that's the whole point...this one is USM. ;)

This one is AF-S, does not mean it is a silent wave motor, and for the price it will be micro motor

Uhm..

AF-S means silent wave motor, Nikon doesnt do Micromotors in their lenses..

or they have incredibly silent micro motors

A nikon expert friend is pretty sure they do use micromotors and af-s does not designate silent wave.

Are you sure about that?

For fast and whisper quiet autofocus operation, the new Nikon 40mm Micro lens also features Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor technology, which allows photographers to get even closer without disturbing a subject. For complete control, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm offers users both manual-priority autofocus (M/A) and manual focus (M) modes to quickly and easily switch focus modes on the fly. To help ensure amazing lens performance at close distances, this new lens employs Nikon’s Close-Range Correction System. With this system, the lens elements are configured in a "floating” design wherein each lens group moves independently to help achieve critical focus. Additionally, Nikon’s Super Integrated Coatings are applied to help reduce instances of lens flare and ghosting. The seven blade diaphragm also helps to create a more natural out of focus component.

I'm very sure...

Also from the 18-55 VR page, the 18-55 VR being one of the cheapest lenses they offer:

Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast, quiet auto focus operation.

http://www.nikonusa.com …mm-f%252F3.5-5.6G-VR.html (external link)

Right side, Second from bottom

AF-S means SWM, Period, Their micromotor driven lenses have an AF-I designation and have not been made in a long time, they were only used in the very very big telephotos because Nikon's in-body motor simply couldnt drive a 500mm f/4 lens' focus group effectively compared to the Canon competition, the AF-I lenses are considered utter crap however last I checked because they're not terribly fast focusing either and they didnt last long on the market...

Perhaps what your friend means is a silent-wave micromotor, Similar to Canon's Micro-USM thats used in the 50mm f/1.4 and that..Its still a type of SWM however

A nikon expert friend is pretty sure they do use micromotors and af-s does not designate silent wave.

Also, From Nikon's site, in case i needed even more proof of this:

AF-S: Autofocus Silent Focusing is driven by a "Silent Wave" motor in the lens instead of the focus drive motor in the camera. AF-S lenses focus faster than standard AF-NIKKORs and almost completely silently.

So yes, AF-S = Silent Wave Autofocus and your "Nikon Expert" friend is wrong

Canon has used USM in all kinds of lenses, too, regardless of whether it is ring-type or not. Sigma uses HSM all the time when it is micro-HSM.

"quiet and fast" is marketing talk and that is no proof that a ring type motor is being used. Do you have full time manual on the 18-55 VR?
