Canon has used USM in all kinds of lenses, too, regardless of whether it is ring-type or not. Sigma uses HSM all the time when it is micro-HSM.

"quiet and fast" is marketing talk and that is no proof that a ring type motor is being used. Do you have full time manual on the 18-55 VR?

The point was "is it using a SWM" and it is using an SWM, and not a traditional micromotor

The 18-55, 55-300 and 55-200s are the only ones that lack FTM to my knowledge, the 40 macro does have FTM from its M/A designation, which is manual priority autofocus, read: Full time manual override

Also shall i point out i own the 18-55, 55-300 and 35mm f/1.8 and i know how loud they are? Heres a hint, They're as silent as my 15-85, 100-400 and 100L

-edit- Sorry if im sounding harsh or nasty or anything, im really not meaning to

My nikon expert friend hadn't said anything about the macro, just that nikon dont designate silent wave motor with af-s.

If this has a proper focus motor then all good. But its a lens I cant see selling much, at least I wouldnt be interested in ot.

I'd recommend it as a first macro lens, For the price ($280) its a good cheap way to experiment with macro photography, And depending on the subject, it could be handy to have actually (For instance, i'd be apt to pick one up as i shoot a lot of macros)

You were being a bit defensive about it, but it appears you are right. Nikon's website says all AF-S lenses have SWM.

Uhm..

AF-S means silent wave motor, Nikon doesnt do Micromotors in their lenses..

or they have incredibly silent micro motors

Nikon's use of the SWM moniker is similar to Canon's use of USM. SWM can signify Ring type or micromotor.

Checkout: http://www.clubsnap.com …-of-SWM-Silent-Wave-Motor (external link) for a listing of lenses and motors.

Also, from Nikon's site:

"...The two SWM lens types - ring type and compact type - are specifically chosen to match each lens's specs and design..."
