So I have been wanting to get a 85 for a while for head shots, I thought I would really like the 135L but it seems I haven't been using it all that much. So I was thinking of getting rid of it to fund a 85.

Now the second question is on the 85, I am looking at the 85Lii or sigma. The 85 1.8 is too light and doesn't balance well with my 1dmkiv. Beside all of the talk I have read between the two lens is there that much of a difference between 1.4 and 1.2? I have use my 35L a lot, so I am familar with the 1.4, but have not used a 1.2. I was thinking if I get the sigma I would have enough to fund a 50L. Then it would seem like I would have all of areas covered except uwa, which I am waiting for a while.

What are your thoughts?

there is a difference between the sigma 85mm and the canon 85L. but if you've never used the 85L, get the sigma, save your money for the 50L, because you'll never know the difference.

once you use that 85L, you won't be able to stop thinking about it...even if you buy the sigma.

Can you live with a focus issue? Some users report Sigma 85 focus inaccuracy.
But from the picture side by side, I couldn't tell the difference between both lens IQ (pixel-peep).

Have you ever use Sigma before?

If it has a focus issue, you send it in and it comes back without the issue.

I did a lot of reading on Sigma's and was scared of even trying them out. Once I got my butt into the store with my camera to test them I was convinced that they're a fantastic lens. I didn't get the 85 f1.4 but I did buy the Sigma 50 f1.4 and it's razor sharp and focusing is great even in low light. I'll get the Sigma 85 f1.4 next. When I bought the Sigma 50 f1.4 I also tested the Carl Zeiss ZE f1.4 and the Canon 50 f1.2L. The CZ is great if you don't mind spending a couple hundred more and using manual focus. The Canon f1.2L is only worth it if you need f1.2, other than that save your money, I liked the Sigma more. I also don't regret selling my 24-70 f2.8L to replace it with some sigma primes.

I've had my sigma story too...

- ordered two brand-new 85/1.4. Both with horrible front- or backfocus depending on the distance. So you basically have a sharp picture within the mfd but once your subject is a few feet away... bam. Fail.

- same on a Sigma 50 1.4 I've had. I bought it used. It was meant to be corrected by sigma...yea... not.

Do people not go to stores anymore where they can try it before they buy it? There are still somethings I'd never buy online no matter what the cost savings are.

I have 50L, 85L and 135L and I am selling 135L now. Just no chance to use it. I use 85 for portrait and 50 for walkaround (all on FF). I also have 70-200II for events.

I'm jealous!!!! :D
hahahaha.

I guess I might choose the cheaper sigma route, sigma 50, 85, 70-200 OS :D
But the 70-200 II is tempting!!! :D

Well I think what I am going to do is hold off on the 50L for the time being, buy the Sigma 1.4, and compare the 85 to the 135L to see if I really happy letting it go. The 135L is such an awesome lens I hate to even think about getting rid of it.

i too have been having a similar problem deciding if i want to keep my 200L or use it to fund a 50 1.4 and 85 1.8. love the 200L but im thinking you should have a lens because its usefull and although i love the iq and am perfectly happy with it i always have to find a use for it. i never think to myself "man my 200L would be great for this" its always more like " hmm wonder what i can find to shoot with the 200L?" lol

Nothing to see here....

Sorry to sound so in-your-face... I blame it on good home made wine.....

doesn't balance well ? I can say that about a LOT of lenses on my gripped 5DII's. Your 100-400 balances well ? If it's the right lens, balance is a non issue.

Actually, based on your gear list, an 85 probably balances the best. All the weight would be in the center of the camera.

At least on a FF, I much prefer 85mm to 135mm but you may not. I seem to have gotten tired of the "compressed" look in the last year.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

The reason I mentioned balancing was due to camera shake. I had a 100 f2 while it was sharp I noticed much more camera shake then I did on all my other lens'. Becuase the lens was so light it almost threw off the balance of the body. With the 135L and it's extra bulk, I find it so much easier to get in focus photos at slower shutter speeds. Maybe it's technique, but it was a noticable observation. I feel like the canon 85 1.4 would be the same since it is similar is size and wieght.
