My lens was dropped today mounted to a camera, looks as if it landed on one corner of the lens and pushed it back. The inner zoom barrel is now stuck cockeyed and won't zoom or focus. Is there any hope for it? Any way to easily fix it? I've never opened up a lens and not really looking to, but if it's somewhat easy, I guess I could try. Can't really hurt anything I guess. What do you think?

Nope..i'd give it a whirl.. for the experience, if anything. Like you say, nothing to lose.. you can pick up used one's a dime-a-dozen. ;) Sorry about your bad luck, but have fun. Be glad it wasn't an expensive lens mounted when this happened!

Yep, for what you can pick these lenses up for, its certainly not worth sending in for repair. If you can't fix it then time to look for another one, or maybe time to upgrade to something even better!

You might as well dissect it. Your chance of being able to put it right is probably comparable to your chance of winning the lotto, but if you have the time and interest, go for it!

I've got it apart to the point of taking the focusing motor out but can't get the barrel out because it only zooms from 18-24 mm and hits something, so I can't rotate it to reveal the screws under the rubber zoom ring. I need to sleep before I throw it out the window. Hopefully tomorrow yields good news.

I am a poor just graduated from college student and just bought a new lens last week, so I have no money to be buying another one this soon. Hopefully I can save it

Did this with a old lens before. Just muscle it up and pull the
Front end out the barrel til it straightens out. Mine still worked after. Good luck

This thing is either really stuck or built like a tank... I've reached the end of my patience with it, and even trying to pull it apart with all of my strength yields nothing. I've put it on the table and put all of my weight on it opposite the side that was pushed in, still nothing. I've hit it on the table, trying to jam the opposite side in like the other in order to even it out, nothing! I've even stuck a screwdriver between the barrel and the outer body and tried to pry it back straight! Any other ideas short of throwing it out the window?

Edit: I just threw it on the floor and now it zooms the full range... Still cockeyed, so no focusing or stabilization still. One step forward! I can also zoom it so i can see the screws under the rubber ring, but I don't have a screwdriver small enough. Maybe I'll find someone with an eyeglass screwdriver tomorrow.. :)
